LG U+ and the Seoul Metropolitan Government have rolled up their sleeves to engage in energy conservation and social contribution activities that save energy and practice love for neighbors.

LG Uplus and the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 2nd that they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on ‘cooperation in energy efficiency and social contribution’ at Seoul City Hall with LG Uplus Vice Chairman Kwon Young-soo and Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon in attendance.

The two sides agreed to jointly promote an ICT-based energy consumption efficiency project targeting apartments and affiliated organizations located in Seoul, thereby realizing the goal of "Seoul, an Energy Self-Reliant City" through reductions in energy usage, peak power consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Accordingly, LG U+ and the Seoul Metropolitan Government have decided to build and pilot a 'Sales of Electricity Saved (Home Electricity Demand Resource Trading)' system that will reward each household with incentives for saving electricity by utilizing energy-saving solutions such as IoT energy meters.

Households that have installed LG U+ IoT energy meters can easily manage and save on actual power usage by checking real-time and accumulated power usage through a smartphone application, as well as receiving alarms for changes in progressive rate sections.

In addition, U+Biz EMS (Energy Management System) is an energy-saving solution that allows real-time monitoring and control of ▲lighting power ▲motor power ▲peak power, etc. through smartphones for apartments and public institutions located in Seoul. We also decided to review the possibility of applying the ‘Solution’.

Introducing U+Biz EMS to save energy

By introducing U+Biz EMS, a building/factory energy saving solution that utilizes LG U+'s high-quality LTE network and Internet of Things (IoT) control technology, you can monitor the power usage of lighting and air conditioning equipment in buildings in real time through PCs, tablets, and even LTE smartphones, and save energy by remotely controlling lighting brightness and motor speed.

First, for lighting control, by replacing fluorescent lights in underground parking lots and other areas with high-efficiency LED lights, the brightness of the lights can be adjusted by time zone using the U+ lighting controller, saving 50% to 80% of annual lighting energy.

Power control can save 20-35% of power energy by controlling the speed of motors that drive air conditioning, cooling, and heating facilities by optimizing it to the surrounding environment using a power controller (high-efficiency inverter). Additionally, peak control can systematically manage the building's maximum power within the target value, thereby reducing the building's electricity bill (basic rate).

In particular, LG U+ and the Seoul Metropolitan Government added meaning by agreeing to engage in social contribution activities such as supporting energy poverty and covering surgical expenses for low-income families with the profits earned from energy efficiency activities.

The two parties plan to provide a service that charges and delivers energy storage systems (ESS) to 30 households in energy poverty, including senior citizens living alone and households receiving basic livelihood security benefits, in Yeokchon-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, by April.

This energy sharing activity, called 'Battery that Greets Every Day', is a project that alleviates concerns about electricity bills by delivering ESS charged using idle electricity at night at community centers and collecting and recharging discharged ones before returning them.

This is a necessary service for low-income people who have a coal boiler but cannot change the coal due to physical discomfort, cannot use heating devices due to the high cost of fuel such as gas and oil and rely only on electric blankets, and those who are living in the cold due to concerns about electricity bills. It is gaining attention as a new business model to replace the winter energy welfare business, which is limited to briquette delivery, by delivering batteries that relieve electricity bill worries while checking in on people's well-being every day.

Additionally, LG U+ is expanding its "Bills That Deliver Love" campaign, which supports the surgical expenses of children with incurable diseases from low-income families by using the savings from changing postal bills to email or mobile bills, to medical institutions under the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Since launching its "Bills of Love" campaign in March 2011, LG U+ has been covering the surgical costs of one to three children with heart disease and other incurable diseases each month, helping 72 children regain their health (as of December 2015).

LG Uplus Vice Chairman Kwon Young-soo emphasized, “We decided to join forces with the Seoul Metropolitan Government because this energy consumption efficiency cooperation project is a very important task in realizing Seoul as an energy self-sufficient city.” He added, “It is even more meaningful because we can promote civic awareness of energy conservation through ICT-based energy consumption efficiency activities and also carry out social contribution activities of energy sharing.”
