South Korea Ranks 8th Globally for Average Mobile Speed at 13Mbps

Korea ranked first in the world for average internet speed for nine consecutive quarters and maintained the top position in broadband penetration across all sectors. The average mobile speed was 13 Mbps, ranking first in the Asia-Pacific region and eighth globally.
According to the 'State of the Internet Q1 2016 Report' released by Akamai Korea (CEO Son Bu-han), a global leader in the Content Delivery Network (CDN) field, Korea ranked first in the world with an average internet speed of 29 Mbps in the first quarter of 2016. This represents an 8.6% increase compared to the previous quarter and is approximately five times faster than the global average.

The average internet speed worldwide in the first quarter of 2016 was 6.3 Mbps, up 12% from the previous quarter and 23% from the same period last year. Korea also maintained its position as the world's number one in broadband (4Mbps, 10Mbps, 15Mbps, and 25Mbps) penetration rates, at 97%, 84%, 69%, and 42%, respectively, following the previous quarter.
South Korea ranked 8th globally in average mobile speeds, based on internet access via mobile network operators. The UK (27.9 Mbps) took first place, followed by Belgium and Norway. Japan (10 Mbps) ranked 17th, and China (6.5 Mbps) ranked 37th. Belgium recorded the highest IPv6 adoption rate at 36%. Six European countries showed strength in this sector, placing within the top 10. In the Asia-Pacific region, Malaysia (13%) and Japan (8.6%) ranked 8th and 10th, respectively.

David Belson, editor of the State of the Internet report, stated, “Online viewing is expected to increase more than ever this year with the hosting of the Brazil Olympics,” adding, “Global connection speeds have more than doubled compared to the summer of 2012, allowing viewers around the world to enjoy high-quality video streaming services through numerous internet-connected devices and platforms.”
