Korea's average internet speed remains the fastest globally, ranking first for 10 consecutive quarters.
Published2016.10.11 17:05South Korea has ranked first in the world for average internet speed for ten consecutive quarters. Its 4Mbps broadband penetration rate ranks third, following Andorra and Malta.
According to the "2016 Q2 Internet State Report" released by Akamai Korea (CEO Son Boo-han), a global leader in content delivery networks (CDNs), Korea ranked first globally with an average internet speed of 27 Mbps, a 17% increase from the same period last year. Norway (20.1 Mbps) and Hong Kong (19.5 Mbps) ranked second and third, respectively.
In the second quarter of 2016, the global average internet speed was 6.1 Mbps, a 14% increase from the same period the previous year. Andorra ranked first in 4 Mbps broadband penetration, with 97%, followed closely by Malta and South Korea in second and third place, respectively. South Korea maintained its top spot globally, with 79%, 63%, and 37% of 10 Mbps, 15 Mbps, and 25 Mbps penetration, respectively.

Belgium ranked first in IPv6 adoption rate at 38%. While Malaysia and Japan ranked among the top 10 Asia-Pacific countries in this sector in the first quarter, no Asia-Pacific country ranked among the top 10 in the second quarter.
“The fact that average internet speeds are increasing is welcome news for online retailers preparing for the peak holiday shopping season,” said David Belson, editor of the State of the Internet report. “While we take the internet for granted in our daily lives, we need to recognize that internet access and usage are influenced by a variety of factors.”

KT, 모든 LAN 환경에서 기가 속도 '저비용 기가 인터넷 확산'
KT는 LAN선 환경에서 거주하는 모든 고객에게 1Gbps 인터넷 속도를 제공할 수 있는 ‘2pairs LAN GiGA 인터넷’ 솔루션을 세계 최초로 개발했다고 7일 밝혔다. ‘2pairs LAN GiGA 인터넷’은 통신실과 가입자 구간의 변조방식을 개선해 속도를 2배 가량 증가 시키는 기술이다. 이 솔루션을 통해 KT는 광케이블(FTTH)망이나 4pairs LAN선이 설치되지 않은 환경에 거주하는 고객에게도 1Gbps 인터넷 속도를 제공할 수 있게 된다.

KT Giga Internet Surpasses 2 Million Subscribers in 23 Months Since Launch
KT가 기가 인터넷 가입자가 200만 돌파를 맞아 ‘기가 인터넷 2..0’ 시대를 선언했다. ‘기가 인터넷 2.0’은 전국 어디에서나 1Gbps 이상의 인터넷속도 제공을 목표로 하고 있다. KT는 29일 서울 광화문 KT스퀘어에서 기자간담회를 열고, 기가 인터넷 가입자가 200만을 넘어섰다고 밝혔다. 2014년 10월 20일, 국내 최초로 전국 상용화한 지 1년 11개월 만이다. KT 기가 인터넷의 가입자 증가는 시간이 지날수록 탄력을 받고 있다. 가입자 100만을 달성하기까지는 약 14개월(‘15년 12월)이 걸렸지만 100만 가입자가 추가 증가하는 데는 약 9개월이 소요됐다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
