SK Telecom Signs LTE Technology Transfer Agreement with Mobifone

SK Telecom announced on the 24th that it has signed a contract with Mobifone, Vietnam's second-largest mobile operator, to provide 'LTE nationwide network construction consulting.'
SK Telecom plans to pursue the following with Mobifone: ▲LTE network evolution strategy establishment and network design/construction consulting through 2020 ▲Transfer of SK Telecom's proprietary network simulation technology (CellPLAN) ▲Cooperation in 5G, value-added services, IoT network and solution fields.
CellPLAN is a base station coverage simulation solution developed and advanced by SKT.
▲ Mobifone shows the highest market share among Vietnamese mobile operators
The competitive bidding for Mobifone's LTE network consulting involved SK Telecom along with telecom operators and specialized consulting firms from Asia and Europe. SK Telecom stated that it was successful in securing the contract based on favorable evaluations of its mobile communications technology and overseas consulting experience accumulated since 2012.
Since 2012, SK Telecom has been performing LTE consulting projects for over 10 operators in 8 countries including China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Additionally, SK Telecom has been serving as an advisor to Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications in the IoT and public safety communication network fields since last year, contributing to the development of Vietnam's telecommunications industry.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom is also moving forward with international cooperation and technology dissemination in 5G following LTE. Last August, SK Telecom uniquely participated among domestic companies in a '5G standardization joint cooperation body' created by global major telecom operators and manufacturers, and in November demonstrated connected cars (in cooperation with BMW) at the world's largest 5G testbed, establishing a prominent position in the 5G sector.

SKT Signs MoU for Joint 5G Research with Verizon
SK Telecom is moving forward with cooperation with Verizon, the largest U.S. telecommunications carrier, to lead 5G standardization. SK Telecom (President and CEO Jang Dong-hyun, www.sktelecom.com) announced on the 15th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Verizon (CEO Lowell McAdam, www.verizon.com), the largest telecommunications carrier in the United States, for 5G standardization and joint research. At the MoU signing ceremony held at SK Telecom's Euljiro headquarters on the 8th, SK Telecom's Choi Jin-sung, Head of Comprehensive Technology Institute, and Roger Gurnani, Vice President of Verizon and Chief Information and Technology Architect (CITA), attended and pledged close cooperation for 5G mobile telecommunications network standardization and joint research and development.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
