LG Electronics recently obtained UL safety certification, which is essential for entering the U.S. market for power generation energy storage systems (ESS), and has set out to target the rapidly growing U.S. market.

The U.S. power market has become unstable due to the aging transmission network. Last February, a storm that struck Southern California caused power outages affecting more than 100,000 people. The shutdown of some power generation facilities reduced power output, leading to rapid fluctuations in the grid's frequency and triggering a large-scale blackout.

UL certification (UL1741) is a U.S. safety standard related to PCS that tests whether a total of 15 safety conditions are met, including maximum voltage, temperature saturation, withstand voltage, input/output power characteristics, and overload operation. U.S. power generation companies require ESS suppliers to submit this.

Based on this UL certification and its experience in the domestic ESS business, LG Electronics plans to focus on identifying and expanding power generation ESS businesses in Guam, Hawaii, and California.
