Riverbed Acquires Cloud-Based Wi-Fi Network Company

Riverbed Technology Korea has reached a final agreement to acquire Xirrus, a leading next-generation Wi-Fi network company.
Through the acquisition of the private company Zirus, the capabilities of the SD (Software Defined)-WAN and cloud networking solution 'Riverbed SteelConnect' are expected to be expanded by integrating with a stable and proven high-performance cloud-managed Wi-Fi solution.
Through this, Riverbed customers and partners will receive integrated connectivity and policy-based orchestration capabilities across distributed networks, including WAN, LAN/WLAN, data centers, and the cloud. Riverbed also plans to continue supplying Zirus products as stand-alone enterprise WLAN solutions.
Jerry M. Kennelly, Chairman and CEO of Riverbed Kennelly stated, “The acquisition of Zirus is a strategic decision that secures Riverbed the best enterprise-grade Wi-Fi solution,” adding, “Through the performance enhancement of SteelConnect, we are now providing a unique SD-WAN solution that will accelerate Riverbed’s growth amidst fierce market competition.”
He also added, “In today’s digital, cloud, and mobile environment, enterprise networks have become far more complex and unpredictable than before, leading IT teams to face management challenges.” He continued, “At a time when we must fundamentally rethink networking, this acquisition puts Riverbed and its partners in a more advantageous position to implement software-defined network approaches for CIOs and enterprise customers, and to provide integrated connectivity and management capabilities across the entire network.”
Riverbed plans to provide Zirus solutions through a stable partner ecosystem. The acquisition of Zirus, headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California, is scheduled to be completed in April 2017.

Limelight Networks Announces 'Cloud Security Service' to Block Unauthorized Access
라임라이트 네트웍스는 사이버 공격 및 컨텐츠 도난, 비인가(unauthorized) 액세스 차단 기능을 강화하여 CDN 인프라 전반에 강력한 보안 서비스를 제공하는 ‘클라우드 보안 서비스(Cloud Security Services)’를 출시한다고 밝혔다. 라임라이트 네트웍스의 ‘클라우드 보안 서비스’는 ‘Security Alert’과 ‘WAF Express’ 기능이 강화되었다. Security Alert은 웹사이트 및 웹 애플리케이션에 대한 보다 확장적인 보호 기능을 제공한다. 디도스 공격 감지 및 경보(alerting) 기능을 제공하여 고객들이 웹사이트 및 애플리케이션에 대한 악의적인 공격을 정확히 파악할 수 있도록 해준다. 또한, 고객 컨텐츠 전송 서비스는 인터넷에 노출된 공격 지점들을 최소화하고, 라임라이트 네트워크의 방어적인 보호가 효과적으로 실행될 수 있게 한다.

AWS: How Far Has It Come?
140년 전통 제조업체 GE가 자신들을 ‘스타트업’이라 지칭했다. 클라우드를 도입하며 시작 단계에 섰다는 것이다. 지난 19일 열린, 아마존의 웹서비스 AWS 서밋 기조연설에서 염동훈 대표는 개발과 운영의 혼합된 형태인 데브옵스(DevObs)를 언급하며 “기존에는 새로운 버전을 구매하는 형태였다면, 이젠 구매가 아닌 업데이트를 생각해야 한다.”고 말했다. 또한, 염대표는 "이미 많은 기업이 고민을 마치고 클라우드를 시행하고 있다.”며 “클라우드는 더는 고민할 것이 아니다.”고 말했다. 그의 말에 따르면, GE는 9,000개의 기업내 워크로드를 AWS로 전환했고 3년 내 34개의 데이터센터를 4개로 축소할 계획이다. AWS 전환 후 현재 스코어는 기존 대비 52% 비용 절감, 비즈니스 어플리케이션 제공 속도 77% 향상, 운영 배포 사이클 주기 단축 몇 ‘일’에서 몇 ‘시간’으로, 고객 및 시장 대응 240% 향상이다. 아마존의 R&D 과정은 자사에 직접 시뮬레이션 과정을 거친다. 그렇게 데이터 레이크(DATA LAKE) 클라우드 스토리지 S3이 형성됐다. S3는 지멘스, 혼다, GE까지 포괄하는 다양한 옵션을 제공하고 편의에 따라 변환할 수 있다. 여기에 아마존의 딥러닝을 더해 프로그래밍과 데이터 알고리즘, GPU기능을 갖췄다. 삼성 SDS의 SCM(공급망관리) 고도화 위한 클라우드 활용 사례 지난해 미국의 물류 전문지 저널오브커머스에서 ‘물류 분야에 성장을 이끄는 회사’를 주제로 삼성SDS의 특집 기사를 싣기도 했다. 삼성SDS의 물류 사업 중심에는 첼로(CELLO)가 있다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
유럽특허청(EPO)의 ‘기술 대시보드 2025’에 따르면 지난해 유럽 특허 출원은 20만1974건으로 처음 20만건을 넘었다. 한국 기업과 발명가의 출원은 1만4355건으로 전년보다 9.5% 증가해 국가별 5위를 유지했다. 배터리와 디지털 통신, 반도체가 증가세를 이끌었고, 삼성은 2년 연속 EPO 최대 출원 기업, LG는 3위에 올랐다. 서울·수원·용인 등 국내 주요 도시의 존재감도 확인됐다. 한국의 유럽 특허 전략이 개별 기술을 넘어 산업 전반으로 확장되고 있다는 점도 드러났다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
