Leading 5G Nations Discuss Plans to Establish Convergence Ecosystem

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced that it strengthened 5G policy cooperation and discussed ways to create a convergence ecosystem with the five leading 5G nations (Korea, the United States, Japan, China, and the EU) at the '3rd Global 5G Event' held in Tokyo, Japan.
The Global 5G Event is an international cooperation meeting hosted sequentially by five leading nations across continents, and this meeting was attended by over 500 government officials and experts from industry, academia, and research from the five countries.
In particular, the latest trends regarding convergence services between 5G and other industries such as automobiles, medical, education, and various sectors were presented, and experts from major countries discussed ways to create a convergence ecosystem.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced, “As the importance of 5G, a core foundation for realizing a hyper-connected intelligent information society, grows, we have established the '5G Mobile Communication Industry Development Strategy' and are pursuing major tasks in four areas: service, technology, standardization, and ecosystem.”
In addition, he stated, “We launched a pilot service in Pyeongchang in 2018 to prepare for the 5G era and are preparing for the world’s first commercialization. We hope you visit Korea during the Olympics to experience the pilot services, such as immersive media from the athlete’s perspective and 5G autonomous buses.”
The next 4th Global 5G Event is scheduled to be held in our country around November of this year.

KT to Provide 5G Media Services at the Youth World Cup
KT announced on the 24th that it successfully provided media services based on a 5G trial network at the Korea-Argentina match on the 23rd, following the Korea-Guinea match on the 20th at the U-20 World Cup Korea 2017. KT is participating as an official IT sponsor at this U-20 World Cup. Among the six stadiums hosting 52 preliminary and main tournament matches, KT has established a 5G trial network at Jeonju World Cup Stadium and Suwon World Cup Stadium, where Korea's preliminary matches and final will be held. Based on this infrastructure, KT provided fast and immersive media services by connecting dedicated cameras and 5G base stations installed at the stadiums with 5G core equipment in Umyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, and a CDN center in Bundang-gu, Seongnam. The 360-degree VR applied stitching technology to seamlessly join high-definition footage captured by multiple VR-dedicated cameras installed behind the goal line to be viewable in a 360-degree direction, along with technology to transmit the stitched footage in real-time over an ultra-high-speed network. This can be experienced firsthand at the CD Zone (Commercial Display Zone) set up outdoors at Jeonju and Suwon World Cup Stadiums. For those unable to visit the stadium, downloading the 'FIFA U-20 WC 2017 VR Player' app allows viewing of 360-degree footage on a personal mobile phone. The app can be downloaded from Google Play Store and is also linked via banners on olleh tv mobile and the three terrestrial broadcasting networks' apps. Interactive Time Slice is a media service that allows users to select a desired point in time or player and rotate still images from various angles. It features smooth viewpoint transitions through Flying View and the ability to select a desired player to view that player's footage in detail through Free-Focus, offering various ways to experience the dynamic nature of the match. Interactive Time Slice can be experienced at the CD Zone outdoors at the stadiums and has also been provided to broadcasters for TV coverage. Additionally, KT will display a 5G bus at the CD Zone operating outdoors at Jeonju and Suwon World Cup Stadiums during Korea's preliminary matches and final. The 5G bus offers content including three-dimensional augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), holograms, and autonomous driving demonstration videos. Meanwhile, wishing for Korea's team to perform well, KT will hold street cheering events following the Korea-Argentina match on the 23rd and again at the Korea-England match on the 26th. European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
