Nordic launches Bluetooth development kit enabling wireless functionality implementation from cloud
Published2017.06.02 11:12Nordic Semiconductor has announced the launch of Nordic Thingy:52, a fully-featured single-board Bluetooth 5 (Bluetooth® 5) compatible Bluetooth Low Energy development kit that enables wireless functionality implementation directly from smartphone apps or the cloud.
Nordic Thingy:52 allows app developers without firmware coding expertise or high-level development tools to rapidly design and demonstrate IoT (Internet of Things) devices along with related mobile devices and internet applications. App developers can easily and quickly configure the development kit's embedded applications through the Bluetooth interface provided on mobile devices.
The development kit is based on Nordic's nRF52832 Bluetooth Low Energy SoC, which features a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F microprocessor and 2.4GHz multi-protocol wireless functionality (Bluetooth 5, ANT™ and 2.4GHz proprietary RF software), along with 512kB flash memory and 64kB RAM. The nRF52832 SoC supports Nordic's S132 SoftDevice, an RF software stack that supports up to 20 simultaneous connections to enable implementation of various combinations of Bluetooth Low Energy functionality.
The Nordic Thingy:52 PCB is housed in a plastic and rubber enclosure measuring 6x6cm and includes a USB connector for charging the device's lithium-ion battery. The development kit also includes an integrated digital microphone and speaker, motion sensors (9-axis including accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer), ultra-low-power wake-up accelerometer, pressure and temperature, humidity, air quality, and color sensors. Nordic Thingy:52 comes with firmware examples and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity apps for iOS and Android, and Nordic also supports additional source-code app software available on GitHub.

Nordic, Thread Networking Solution SDK to Help Home IoT
Nordic Semiconductor has announced the nRF5 SDK (Software Development Kit), a Thread networking solution. This solution is an open-source Thread networking protocol that supports smart home and residential IoT development. Key residential IoT applications based on Thread include home automation, home appliances, access control, temperature control, safety, lighting, healthcare, and security systems. The solution can be designed utilizing the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY supported by Nordic's latest nRF52840 multi-protocol Bluetooth Low Energy SoC. Additionally, an innovative Thread network-based DFU (Device Firmware Update) function has been added, similar to the OTA (Over-The-Air) DFU already implemented in Nordic's existing SDK and chips. Nordic Semiconductor's nRF52840 SoC, which provides 256 KB of RAM and 1 MB of flash memory, can run both Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy protocol stacks on the same single chip. Security functionality executes Thread security algorithms using the ARM CryptoCell-310 cryptographic accelerator integrated into the Cortex-M-based Bluetooth Low Energy SoC. All of these features are implemented based on an IP-based mesh network (IPv6 with 6LoWPAN support) that is familiar to developers. The Thread Group, a non-profit organization, is committed to establishing Thread as the foundation for IoT products both inside and outside the home. It educates product developers, manufacturers, and consumers about Thread's unique features and benefits, and ensures reliable use through objective product certification. Additionally, the nRF5 SDK for Nordic's nRF52840 SoC includes a pre-implemented OpenThread stack and various Thread feature examples, OpenThread network co-processor support, CoAP application layer examples, border router and cloud connectivity examples, and various PC tools including Thread topology monitor. Geir Langeland, Sales and Marketing Director at Nordic Semiconductor, stated, "Thread is currently one of the major emerging wireless technologies in the residential IoT sector," and added, "Nordic will continue to strategically invest in the development and advancement of the OpenThread software stack." Nordic's Thread nRF5 SDK is currently available in Alpha version, with the full version scheduled for release in Q4 2017, coinciding with the mass production of Nordic's nRF52840 SoC.

Nordic Demonstrates Latest Products and Technologies at CES Asia
Nordic Semiconductor announced that it will unveil its latest nRF52 series System-on-Chip (SoC) product line at CES Asia, along with various Bluetooth® Low Energy and IEEE 802.15.4-based applications, as well as prototyping tools and reference designs.
