SKT to establish IoT security guidelines

SK Telecom announced that following its appointment as the chair of the 'IoT Security Division,' it will take the lead in discovering security policies to activate the IoT industry. The 'IoT Security Division' is a consultation body comprising private companies such as SK Telecom and LG CNS, related startups, academia, and research institutions.
In March, private companies and research institutions united to launch the 'Public-Private IoT Expansion Council' for systematic IoT industry development, and structured the council into four divisions: ▲Security ▲Convergence ▲Network·Service ▲Platform·Standardization. Among these, the 'IoT Security Division' took swift action to strengthen IoT ecosystem competitiveness by appointing a chair organization and embarking on substantive activities.
First, SK Telecom plans to establish integrated security guidelines with division member companies to align the security standards of IoT companies. To this end, the company will consolidate different security guidelines by service, and propose guidelines to be commonly applied to all domestic IoT services to the government through setting common areas and analyzing vulnerabilities.
Park Jin-hyo, Network Technology Director at SK Telecom, who was appointed as chair of the Security Division, stated, "To strengthen security in the IoT era, telecommunications companies, manufacturers, security providers, and the government must all work together in unison." He added, "SK Telecom will take the lead in discovering security strengthening policies by thoroughly discussing on-site challenges and improvement measures as the chair of the IoT division."

The ocean: Earth's last communication blind spot. Underwater communication technology for creating the world's first "submarine communication base station" has been unveiled. Underwater communication technology is becoming increasingly critical in South Korea, where three sides of the country are surrounded by ocean, addressing demands including ▲national defense needs such as submarine detection, as well as ▲monitoring radioactivity and shellfish toxins and red tide tracking for seafood safety, and ▲early warning systems for tsunamis and submarine earthquakes. Global competition among nations is intensifying. SK Telecom and Hoseo University announced on the 31st that they successfully conducted underwater communication technology tests using LTE methods in an environment 10km west of Incheon Southern Port, at a water depth of approximately 25m, with a transmission/reception distance of approximately 800m. This is "base station-based underwater communication technology" that has been conducted since 2015, with SK Telecom and 13 other research institutions participating through 2021. On this day, Hoseo University and SK Telecom measured approximately 10 types of information including underwater water temperature, salinity, and current velocity, successfully implementing continuous transmission and reception of text and image data at 20-second intervals by superimposing LTE (OFDM modulation) frequency onto acoustic waves (3~70KHz). During the technology demonstration, the research team showcased real-time image transmission of text and photo data, demonstrating that information collected through various sensors in the underwater network can be aggregated at an underwater base station and then reliably transmitted to land through marine buoys. The waters off Incheon in the West Sea are particularly unsuitable for underwater communication due to high turbidity and shallow depth; the demonstration is evaluated as having demonstrated stable underwater communication network performance despite these adverse conditions. Professor Ko Hak-lim of Hoseo University stated, "The demonstration of underwater communication methods for creating submarine base stations is the first in Korea, and through this demonstration, various data aggregated at the underwater base station successfully transmitted to marine buoys via underwater communication, marking our advancement beyond the critical research phase for establishing an underwater base station testbed."

SKT Rescues Car Novices by Notifying Them When to Replace Batteries, Tires, and More via Vehicle IoT
A new helper is being born for "car clueless" drivers—those who only know about engine oil with a replacement cycle posted on their front windshield among various vehicle consumables. SK Telecom announced on the 1st that it will jointly develop a vehicle management service with KCC Information & Communications that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT). Once the IoT-based vehicle management service is commercialized, it will enable real-time monitoring to check vehicle conditions and allow for management and maintenance tailored accordingly, improving customer convenience in managing their own vehicles. In particular, the IoT-based vehicle management service is more than 50% cheaper in service fees compared to using existing mobile communication networks, and can also reduce service module prices. On this day, the two companies held an MoU signing ceremony at KCC Information & Communications headquarters in Gangseo-gu, with SK Telecom's Cha In-hyuk, Head of IoT Business Division, and KCC Information & Communications' Lee Sang-hyun, Vice Chairman, among others in attendance.

SKT-NVIDIA to Host 'T Hackathon' for Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem
SK Telecom will hold the '3rd T Hackathon (Hack-A-Thon)' competition on August 26-27 together with NVIDIA to revitalize the domestic artificial intelligence ecosystem.
