SKT Selected as 'Best 5G Innovator' at MWC Shanghai

SK Telecom announced that it won the "Best 5G Innovation" award at the "Asia Mobile Awards," held in Shanghai, China on the 28th as a side event of "MWC Shanghai 2017." SK Telecom was the only domestic telecommunications operator to win an award at this ceremony.
The 'Asia Mobile Awards' is organized by the GSMA, a global telecommunications operator alliance, and judges consisting of mobile telecommunications experts and analysts select and announce winners in each category.
The 'Best Innovation for LTE to 5G Evolution' award, which SK Telecom won for the world's first 5G connected car 'T5', is awarded to the most outstanding 5G technology showcased by operators during the year.
Last November, SK Telecom unveiled the world's first 5G connected car, 'T5,' on a large-scale 5G test network together with Ericsson and BMW Korea. Utilizing 5G's ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency, 'T5' demonstrated obstacle avoidance, multi-view, and 360° VR, showcasing the changes that 5G will bring to the world.
With this award, SK Telecom has already won its fourth global award this year for 5G alone. Last May, it won the 'Infrastructure Innovation' award at the 'GTB Awards' for its '5G handover technology'. In addition, it won the 'Best Innovative Partnership Strategy' award at the 'Telecom Asia Awards' and the 'Best 5G Implementation with Partners' award at the 'TechXLR8' Awards for 'T5'.
Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology at SK Telecom, stated, “SK Telecom’s innovative 5G technology is being recognized worldwide, leading to a series of global awards,” adding, “We will establish ourselves as a leading global telecommunications operator through continuous technological innovation.”
Meanwhile, SK Telecom won the 'Best Mobile App for Connected Living' award for its 'Smart[Home]' app.

SKT, 3.5GHz 주파수 대역 활용한 5G 통신 시연 성공
SK텔레콤은 삼성전자, 노키아와 함께 3.5GHz 주파수 대역을 활용한 5G 통신 시연에 성공했다고 밝혔다. 3.5GHz 대역은 기가급 속도 구현은 물론, 전파 도달거리도 넓은 5G 통신을 위한 최적의 주파수 대역으로 꼽힌다. 글로벌 ICT 사업자들은 28GHz 등 초고주파수(밀리미터파)를 중심으로 5G 기술 확보에 나섰다. 하지만, 초고주파수 대역은 넓은 대역폭을 활용한 대용량 데이터 전송에는 유리하지만, 전파 도달거리가 비교적 짧다는 한계가 있다. 이에 따라 중국, 일본 등 세계 각국은 기가급 속도를 구현하면서도 커버리지를 확대할 수 있는 저주파수(6GHz 이하의 저주파수 대역) 5G 기술 확보를 위해 노력해 왔다. SK텔레콤은 우리나라의 5G 저주파수 대역인 3.5GHz 통신 기술 확보에 매진해, 삼성전자 및 노키아와 해당 대역 통신 시연에 성공했다.

SKT Opens ICT Experience Zone on Yeonpyeong Island in Commemoration of Month of Patriots and Veterans
SK텔레콤의 이동형 ICT 체험관 ‘티움 모바일’이 서해 최전방 연평도에서 첨단 기술 교육과 청소년들을 위한 다채로운 체험행사를 진행했다. SK텔레콤은 호국보훈의 달을 맞아 6월 28일부터 삼일간 인천 연평도 소재 연평초중고등학교에서 티움 모바일을 운영하고 있다. 티움 모바일의 이번 연평도 방문은 제2연평해전 15주기인 6월 29일에 맞춰 진행되어 그 의미를 더했다. 티움 모바일은 연평도에서 스마트로봇을 활용한 코딩교육·사물인터넷(IoT)·증강현실(AR)·가상현실(VR)·홀로그램 등을 포함한 다양한 ICT 체험 아이템을 선보였으며, 연평초중고등학교 전교생 133명을 포함한 연평도 지역 주민과 군인 약 2000명에게 체험 기회를 제공했다.

유럽특허청(EPO)의 ‘기술 대시보드 2025’에 따르면 지난해 유럽 특허 출원은 20만1974건으로 처음 20만건을 넘었다. 한국 기업과 발명가의 출원은 1만4355건으로 전년보다 9.5% 증가해 국가별 5위를 유지했다. 배터리와 디지털 통신, 반도체가 증가세를 이끌었고, 삼성은 2년 연속 EPO 최대 출원 기업, LG는 3위에 올랐다. 서울·수원·용인 등 국내 주요 도시의 존재감도 확인됐다. 한국의 유럽 특허 전략이 개별 기술을 넘어 산업 전반으로 확장되고 있다는 점도 드러났다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
