SEMI, North American Semiconductor Equipment Shipments Up 33.4% Year-Over-Year
Published2017.07.26 15:18The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced that North American semiconductor equipment shipments in June reached $2.29 billion.
SEMI reports shipments from semiconductor equipment manufacturers in the North American region as a three-month average in its report. June shipments increased 0.8% compared to May equipment shipments of $2.27 billion, and showed a 33.4% increase compared to May shipments of $1.72 billion in the previous year.
Ajit Manocha, president of SEMI, stated, "North American semiconductor equipment industry shipments in the first half of 2017 increased more than 50% compared to the first half of last year," and added, "While the month-to-month growth rates from January through June do not appear particularly high, the 2017 semiconductor equipment industry is showing substantial increases."
June back-end equipment shipments reached $322 million, up 2.1% from May shipments of $316 million, and increased 29% compared to June shipments of $250 million in the previous year.

South Korea expected to overtake Taiwan as the world's top semiconductor equipment sales leader.
The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced global semiconductor equipment shipments for 2017 at SEMICON West. Global semiconductor equipment sales in 2017 are projected to reach $49.4 billion, representing a 19.8% increase compared to 2016 ($41.2 billion). The $49.4 billion in sales exceeds the previous record high of $47.7 billion achieved in 2000. 2018 is expected to reach $53.2 billion, a 7.7% increase from 2017. SEMI forecasted that wafer processing equipment in 2017 will increase by 21.7% to $39.8 billion, while other front-end equipment sectors including fab facilities, wafer manufacturing, and mask/reticle will increase by 25.6% to $2.3 billion. Assembly and packaging equipment is expected to increase by 12.8% to $3.4 billion, and test equipment is projected to increase by 6.4% to $3.9 billion.

Silicon wafer shipments increased in the second quarter as well.
Following the first quarter of 2017, wafer shipment volumes in the second quarter showed an increasing trend. In the quarterly report on the global wafer industry recently released by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International), silicon wafer shipment volume in the second quarter of this year increased compared to the first quarter of 2017. Silicon wafer area shipments in the second quarter of 2017 totaled 2.978 billion square inches, representing a 4.2% increase from 2.858 billion square inches in the first quarter. Second quarter shipments of this year increased by 10.1% compared to the same period in 2016. This quarterly figure surpassed the record set in the previous first quarter, establishing the highest record.
