SKT Helps Students Commercialize IoT Ideas

A venue was opened where high school and university students from across the country gathered to showcase innovative ideas utilizing the Internet of Things and present new services that did not previously exist.
SK Telecom announced that on July 29 and 30, it held an 'IoT Make-A-thon' competition at the SK Telecom Human Resources Development Center in Icheon, where high school and university students armed with ingenious and distinctive ideas participated to plan and develop various products utilizing IoT.
In March, 226 teams participated in the first round of document screening, and in May, 30 teams competed. Among these, 11 teams (2 high school teams and 9 university teams) that passed the presentation stage participated in the final championship round.
After two days of competition, the final champion team was the 'VADA' team, which developed 'KARBYNE', an IoT smart band that allows users to check text messages, KakaoTalk, Instagram and other SNS through the IoT dedicated network even when leaving their smartphone behind during exercise.
The university team 'VADA', which drew attention for including foreign students, received high marks in technical capabilities and development abilities by presenting ultra-compact wearable device prototypes utilizing the LoRa module, which even existing developers find challenging, despite the short timeframe.
The second place was awarded to the 'Fire Truck' team, which presented 'Golden Time Fire Extinguisher', an IoT device with features such as confirming the location of fire extinguishers in case of fire and automatically sending an alarm to 119 when a fire extinguisher is used for over 10 seconds or when two are used simultaneously.
Third place was awarded to the 'Knock Knock' team, which developed 'I TALK', a service that enables deaf parents and their children to communicate by allowing frequently used words by children captured through children's voice recognition necklaces to be confirmed as text on smartphones through the IoT network, and the 'T.G.Wing' team, which presented 'LoLock', a smart door lock device that issues one-time passwords upon visits from friends or delivery personnel or alerts unauthorized intrusions.
SK Telecom announced that it selected award-winning teams based on evaluation criteria including the potential utilization of LoRa network, the IoT dedicated network, technical capabilities, development abilities, service novelty, business viability, and differentiation from existing products and services.
The championship team will be given the opportunity to directly observe the '9th LoRa Alliance All Members Meeting and Open House (scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in the second half)', where they can directly check the current status of the global IoT market and strategies of global operators.

KT Tackles Fine Dust Across Gwangmyeong City
KT and Gwangmyeong City announced on the 28th that they have concluded an 'IoT-based Fine Dust Environmental Improvement Agreement' to systematically address air pollution issues such as fine dust and to enable efficient air quality management in the region. Through this agreement, KT and Gwangmyeong City, as the first municipal-level local government to do so, will analyze floating populations and fine dust vulnerable areas in Gwangmyeong City and construct an IoT-based air quality monitoring network throughout the city at base stations, telephone booths, utility poles, community centers, and bus stops. Both organizations expect to contribute to creating public value through air quality improvement and reduction of social costs by leveraging ICT technology.

Large-scale industrial complexes monitor the environment using IoT sensors
Building an advanced smart city through the Internet of Things. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that they will implement a "Smart Environmental Monitoring Demonstration Project" that enables rapid identification of causes and situational response when environmental pollution incidents such as odor and noise occur by utilizing IoT and smart city technologies. This demonstration project will install IoT environmental sensors (10 units) in Gangseo-gu, Busan, where large industrial complexes are densely concentrated and odor complaints are rapidly increasing, to detect various pollution sources and generation points of odors. Data collected through the sensors will be transmitted 24/7 in real-time to the Smart City Center to be utilized for grasping pollution conditions and enabling rapid environmental pollution response through cooperation among related organizations such as the environmental department.

Ecolab and K-water Discuss Innovation Collaboration in Advanced Industry Water Management
Ecolab and the Korea Water Resources Corporation jointly discussed cooperation directions for maximizing water use efficiency in advanced industries such as semiconductors and data centers and establishing sustainable water circulation. H.Energy has obtained green technology certification from the Small and Medium Business Administration for solar power generation forecasting and I-V curve anomaly diagnosis technology. The AI-based asset management platform SolarOnCare is deployed across more than 3,000 power plants nationwide, achieving a system uptime of 99.82% and a 3.7% improvement in power generation performance. Through real-time data analysis, it protects power generation revenue by detecting and managing minor losses such as module degradation and partial shading early on.
