KISA Helps Foster Talent for Global ICT Leaders
Published2017.08.10 09:58The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced that it will host the '2nd Asia-Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA)' jointly with the International Internet Address Organization (ICANN)* to discover and foster next-generation global ICT talents at Ewha Womans University for five days starting Monday, August 7.
This academy consists of a total of 21 sessions centered on fundamental topics necessary for future global ICT leaders, such as internet governance, the internet and security, and the current status of the Asia-Pacific region. Group discussions and practical exercises in the format of mock international conferences will be conducted to help participants gain practical experience in international meetings.
About 44 young people aged 18 to under 35 from 18 countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, and Hong Kong, who were selected through open recruitment from 35 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will attend.
KISA plans to support domestic participants who complete the academy with excellent grades to participate in the 60th ICANN Regular Meeting and the 12th UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which will be held in the second half of the year.
Joo Yong-wan, Head of the Internet Infrastructure Division at KISA, stated, “Global discussions are needed regarding social challenges—such as privacy, cybersecurity, human dignity, and employment—that may arise behind the various benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and robots.” He added, “Through this academy, KISA will strengthen international cooperation and foster domestic ICT governance professionals with creative minds and a global mindset who will lead global governance discussions to establish the future value of the Internet.”.

Can Encryption Key Protection Be Secured with Hardware?
Last year, a hacking incident occurred in the United States due to a DDoS attack on DNS services. The cause was the exploitation of webcams and IoT products. How should security be handled in the IoT industry, which is drawing attention as a future growth area? Hacking attacks through networks are a threat, but there is also a high possibility that IoT devices themselves could be physically manipulated and used as a route for cyber attacks. The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) took this into consideration and selected "hardware-based (TPM) IoT terminal security technology" as one of the top 10 information security technologies that the industry should focus on in 2017. Software encryption has the advantages of cost-effectiveness and ease of updates, but it is only as secure as the security level of the device operating system. If the OS has security vulnerabilities, it can be easily breached. Software is also ineffective for protecting encryption keys, which are critical to security. To attack hardware-based security, a secure microcontroller (MCU) must be used, and software must be executed from within its immutable memory to prevent internal modifications.
