Q2 semiconductor equipment shipments increase 36% compared to same period last year
Published2017.09.12 13:43The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced that global semiconductor manufacturing equipment shipments in Q2 2017 totaled $14.1 billion.
The Q2 2017 shipment value of $14.1 billion exceeded the record of $13.1 billion set in Q1 this year. Compared to Q1 shipments, this represents an 8% increase, and compared to Q2 last year, a 35% increase.
Looking at shipments by region, the distribution is almost similar to Q1, and once again, South Korea remains the world's largest semiconductor equipment market. Korea showed a 36% increase compared to the previous quarter and 212% growth compared to the same period last year. Taiwan and China followed in that order.
SEMI prepares reports based on data compiled on a monthly basis from 95 global equipment companies in cooperation with the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ). The following table is presented in US dollars and shows quarterly shipments by region, quarter-over-quarter growth rates, and year-over-year growth rates.

June shipments increased 0.8% compared to May equipment shipments of $2.27 billion, and showed a 33.4% increase compared to May shipments of $1.72 billion in the previous year. Ajit Manocha, president of SEMI, stated, "North American semiconductor equipment industry shipments in the first half of 2017 increased more than 50% compared to the first half of last year," and added, "While the month-to-month growth rates from January through June do not appear particularly high, the 2017 semiconductor equipment industry is showing substantial increases."

SEMI Conducts Semiconductor Industry Field Experience for Middle School Students
The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) hosts an annual program called "High Tech U" designed for middle school students aspiring to pursue studies in science and engineering, offering hands-on experience in the advanced semiconductor industry and career exploration opportunities. This year marks the seventh edition of the event in Korea, which will be held over three days from August 9th to 11th with sponsorship from domestic and international semiconductor companies and universities. High Tech U is a corporate social responsibility program operated by SEMI, running with identical curricula across nine countries including Korea, the United States, Japan, and Taiwan. The program aims to help middle school students gain direct exposure to cutting-edge industries, with the goal of fostering career exploration and developing scientific talent. This year, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education specifically selected 27 female middle school students from grades 2-3. The program is conducted based on recommendations from the relevant provincial education offices, selecting female middle school students who have interest in mathematics and science or have plans to pursue science and engineering careers.

SEMI: North American Semiconductor Equipment Shipments Up 32.8% Year-on-Year
SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) announced that North American semiconductor equipment shipments in July totaled $2.27 billion. SEMI reports semiconductor equipment manufacturer shipments in the North American region on a three-month average basis. July shipments declined 1.4% compared to June equipment shipments of $2.3 billion, while showing a 32.8% increase compared to July of the previous year at $1.71 billion. July front-end equipment shipments reached $1.99 billion, up 0.2% from $1.97 billion in June, and up 37.1% compared to July of the previous year at $1.45 billion. Front-end equipment includes wafer processing, mask/reticle manufacturing, wafer fabrication, and fab equipment.
