Mentor, Don Miller Award Thermal Fluid Design Winner Announced
Published2017.10.12 11:07Mentor, a Siemens business, announced the winner of the third annual Don Miller Award for excellence in system-level thermal fluid design.
The award is named after Don Miller, former director of BHR (British Hydromechanics Research, now BHR Group) in the UK and author of Internal Flow Systems. His book, Internal Flow Systems, serves as the foundation for Mentor Flowmaster software technology. The 2017 Don Miller Award winners were selected by demonstrating excellence in various thermal fluid design applications.
The contest received entries from around the world, including India, Korea, and Australia. One first-place team and two second-place teams were awarded for thermal fluid applications for wastewater recycling, cooling of gas turbine blades, and fuel supply technology for space launch vehicles (SLV), respectively.
Oh Hwa-young and Kang Sun-il from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and Lee Jae-jun, Park Sang-min, and Jung Eun-sang from Hyundai Heavy Industries won first place with their team design work. Their paper, "Analysis on the Filling Mode of Propellant Supply System for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle," was published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Propulsion Engineers. They used FloMASTER simulation models in their analysis to validate the fuel supply scenario to be used in Korea's satellite launch rocket Naro.
The two second-place teams were selected by a judging panel including Don Miller. First, Jurgen Sprengel of JS Pump and Fluid System Consultants in Australia was awarded for his technique in understanding water hammer and distribution issues that may occur in wastewater recycling systems through complex application of the FloMASTER tool.
Roland Feldhinkel, general manager of Mentor Mechanical Analysis Division, said, "On behalf of congratulating the 2017 award winners, I want to express my great impression at the broad participation of FloMASTER customers worldwide. From the list of participants, we could see how wide-ranging applications and innovations have been achieved through our FloMASTER technology."

Mentor Expands Support for TSMC's 7nm/12nm Process Technology
Mentor, a Siemens business, announced that its Mentor Calibre nmPlatform and Analog FastSPICE (AFS) Platform have received qualification certification for TSMC's 12nm FinFET Compact Technology (12FFC) and the latest version of the 7nm FinFET Plus process. The Nitro-SoC™ place and route system has also been certified to support TSMC's 12FFC process technology. Suk Lee, Senior Director of Design Infrastructure Marketing at TSMC, stated, "TSMC is pleased with our close collaboration with Mentor. Mentor continues to enhance its value in the TSMC ecosystem by providing a broader range of capabilities in its tool flow to support our new 12nm and 7nm FinFET Plus processes." He added, "Mentor has been a long-standing strategic partner for us. Moreover, with Siemens actively expanding its investment in Mentor's electronic design automation (EDA) technology, we expect that our joint customers will be better equipped to launch new and even more remarkable IC innovation products." Mentor has enhanced its Calibre nmDRC and Calibre nmLVS tools for the latest versions of TSMC's 12nm and 7nm FinFET Plus processes. Through collaboration with TSMC, Mentor ensured appropriate coverage and optimized the design kit for runtime performance. Additionally, through their collaboration, TSMC and Mentor have ensured that extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography requirements are recognized by their joint customers within Calibre design rule check (DRC) and multipatterning software.

Mentor, TSMC CoWoS Packaging Technology Support
Mentor, a Siemens Business, announced that it has significantly enhanced its Calibre® nmPlatform, Analog FastSPICE™ (AFS™) Platform, Xpedition® Package Integrator, and Xpedition Package Designer tools to support TSMC's innovative InFO integrated fan-out advanced packaging and CoWoS (chip-on-wafer-on-substrate) packaging technology. Through TSMC's InFO and CoWoS 3D packaging technologies, customers can achieve higher levels of integration and capacity compared to traditional one-dimensional ICs by mixing multiple silicon dies into a single device. Mentor currently offers a comprehensive InFO verification and analysis suite spanning from design to package based on the Mentor Calibre and Xpedition platforms. Key benefits include a rapid hierarchical design prototyping environment in Xpedition Package Integrator that enables fast flow from design to tape-out, which is integrated into Xpedition Package Designer and Calibre sign-off verification suite. Through additional collaboration, cross-probing functionality between Calibre 3DSTACK and Xpedition tools has been expanded, and results can be reviewed within the Calibre RVE interface. TSMC and Mentor have also enabled Mentor's thermal analysis products (including Mentor AFS and Calibre xACT™ products) to support thermal-aware simulation for customers' InFO designs.
