ams today announced the launch of the AS5172A/B magnetic position sensors with a two-wire PSI5 interface for fast and reliable transmission of precise rotary position measurements.

The AS5172A and AS5172B system-on-chip (SoC) devices are 0° to 360° contactless rotary magnetic position sensors capable of absolute angle measurement with high 14-bit resolution.

These sensor products were developed as SEooC (safety element out of context) devices as defined in ISO26262, an automotive safety standard, and are equipped with an extensive on-chip self-diagnosis system. This makes the AS5172A/B ideal for safety-critical automotive applications, enabling automotive systems to achieve the highest ASIL safety requirements.

Additionally, the PSI5 interface included in AS5172A/B complies with the latest standards specified in PSI5 specification versions 1.3 and 2.1.

The AEC-Q100 compliant AS5172A/B supports a wide range of automotive remote position sensing applications, including brake and gas pedal position sensing, throttle valves and tumble flaps, steering angle sensors, chassis ride height sensors, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, and fuel level gauges.

Based on Hall sensor technology, the AS5172A/B devices measure the orthogonal components of flux density over a full rotation and compensate for stray magnetic fields in a robust architecture centered around the 14-bit (0.022° resolution) sensor array and analog front end. The AS5172A/B can also be programmed to support movements over a small rotational angular range, as small as 0° to 10°, to achieve the highest resolution for the application.

The device can operate with small and inexpensive target magnets thanks to its high-sensitivity Hall sensor front end, and can also support a wide magnetic field input range from 10 to 90 mT. To provide almost instantaneous indication of the absolute angular position of this magnet, a simple two-pole magnet rotating about its center axis is all that is needed.
