Meet future smart city technology
Published2017.11.10 10:59The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister You Young-min, hereinafter "MSIT") announced that it will hold the "Innovation Growth Momentum Challenge Parade (hereinafter 'Challenge Parade')" on November 18 (Saturday) at Gwanghwamun Plaza (North Plaza, Central Plaza, and Sejong-daero area).
This event will demonstrate and exhibit fourth industrial revolution new technologies that can drive future growth and solve social problems at Gwanghwamun, a venue for national communication.
The Challenge Parade will be held jointly with related government agencies including the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution Commission, and is planned to provide an opportunity to experience future innovative technologies developed by approximately 30 academic, industry, and research institutions, including autonomous electric vehicles, deep-sea exploration robots, artificial rainfall vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, and future firefighter uniforms.
Yong Hong-taek, Director of the Science and Technology Policy Division at MSIT, said, "This event is a large-scale demonstration and planning project that materializes the challenging and creative research and development of academia, industry, and research institutions into growth momentum and enables the public to experience it."
He also stated, "This project will contribute to the implementation of the 'people-centered' science and technology innovation policy initiative through fostering innovative growth momentum and solving social, regional, and global issues based on science and technology."

Technology to identify low-altitude drones is emerging.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is advancing the development of technologies to identify drones operating in low-altitude airspace around 150 meters and prevent illegal drone operations as part of establishing an air traffic control system for low-altitude airspace. The research team announced that it has begun developing security technologies and illegal activity deterrence technologies related to drone identification, authentication, encryption of exchanged information, response to hacking, and privacy protection such as photography prevention for a low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle traffic management system. Korea Electronics Showcases "Virtual Reality Simulations for Education, Training, and Indoor Sports"
The Korea Electronics Show (KES), the nation's largest electronics exhibition in the second half of the year, will be held at COEX for four days from the 17th to the 20th. Samsung, LG, and Mercedes-Benz have opened large-scale booths, and Dongyang Mirae University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, KETI, ETRI, and the Venture Business Association, among others, are participating to present their research results.

Autonomous Driving Motor Show to be Held at Pangyo Zero City
Gyeonggi Province announced that it will host the '2017 Pangyo Autonomous Motor Show (PAMS 2017)' at Pangyo Zero City in Gyeonggi Province for four days from November 16 to 18. Co-hosted by Gyeonggi Province and Seoul National University, jointly organized by KINTEX and the Next-Generation Convergence Technology Research Institute, and sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, this event is an opportunity for Gyeonggi Province—which will begin pilot operations of autonomous shuttle services in December—to showcase autonomous driving technology to the general public one month in advance. At the opening ceremony on the 16th, the autonomous unmanned shuttle will be unveiled. At this motor show, various experiential programs and attractions will be provided, including autonomous vehicle demonstrations and test drives, and LEGO autonomous vehicle contests. An industrial exhibition and international forum will also be held to introduce industry trends related to autonomous driving and showcase future city visions. In particular, the test drive sessions, where visitors can directly experience autonomous vehicles through online pre-registration, are expected to be highly popular. Test drive sessions will operate daily from 12 to 14 o'clock during the motor show period.<br /> <img class="img-wide" src="https://cdn.e4ds.com/news_thumb/a6dinnn0kthrurp3y5em.jpg" style="height:249px;width:500px" /><br /> The autonomous vehicle vs. human mission challenge program will proceed with autonomous vehicles and humans performing driving missions under various traffic conditions such as avoiding falling objects, recognizing construction signs and pedestrians, and observing speed limits. Through preliminary applications, ten diverse drivers—including novice drivers, female drivers, elderly drivers, drivers with over five years of experience, and professional racing drivers—will be selected to compete against autonomous vehicles. Participants for the EV slalom competition will also be selected through advance registration.<br /> <br /> The university student E-Formula racing competition is an event where students majoring in automotive engineering and mechatronics from domestic universities compete with formula race cars equipped with E-powertrains they have personally designed and built. During the motor show period, the winning team will be selected by combining scores from acceleration/braking tests, autocross to evaluate vehicle agility and handling, endurance racing over extended circuit laps, and vehicle design presentation competitions, with prize money worth 10 million won awarded.<br /> <br /> Additionally, LEGO autonomous vehicle contests will be held over two days—the 17th and 18th—in the international seminar room on the first floor of the Enterprise Support Hub, targeting elementary and middle/high school students. Participating teams must prepare an intelligent robotic vehicle that has been pre-programmed and assembled. Robots will autonomously make decisions without player intervention and perform missions such as driving on the track, parallel parking, and crossing uneven sections at the competition venue.<br /> <br /> In addition, the outdoor parking lot area will display various smart mobility devices including electric scooters, electric bicycles, electric skateboards, and electric wheels, with demonstration events utilizing these devices scheduled to take place.<br /> <br /> <strong>Industrial Exhibition and International Forum to Showcase Autonomous Driving-Related Technologies and the Future</strong><br /> <br /> An industrial exhibition featuring participation from domestic and international organizations and companies related to the autonomous driving industry, including IT companies and research institutes, will be held on the first floor of the Enterprise Support Hub. It will operate as a theme pavilion showcasing Gyeonggi Province's future city visions including Pangyo Zero City, and a business pavilion where domestic and international vehicle manufacturers and IT companies participate to showcase autonomous driving-related technologies such as autonomous vehicles, video sensor modules, ADAS technology, V2X (wireless communication between vehicles), and artificial intelligence. An event pavilion featuring various experiential events related to autonomous vehicles will also be provided.<br /> <br /> Additionally, from the 16th over two days, an international forum will be held in the multipurpose hall on the third floor of the Enterprise Support Hub, inviting government, academia-industry-research representatives, and global experts to discuss the fourth industrial revolution and the development of the autonomous driving industry. A special session will be arranged for companies related to autonomous driving to present new technologies and innovative products, and a session to introduce Pangyo Zero City's business model, a key project of Gyeonggi Province, will also be organized.<br /> <br /> Lim Jong-chul, Director of the Economic Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Since this is an autonomous driving motor show, we have structured it primarily around experiential programs that allow motor show participants to directly experience autonomous vehicles." He added, "Since this motor show is held one month before the nation's first autonomous vehicle pilot operation to take place at Pangyo Zero City in December, we expect it will be able to enhance social interest in autonomous vehicles."<br /> <br /> Pangyo Zero City, where this motor show will be held, is a futuristic smart city where automobiles and urban environments exchange information through information and communications technology (ICT). Gyeonggi Province has given it the name 'ZERO' to reflect its commitment to creating a city free of regulations, accidents, risks, missing persons, environmental pollution, and carbon emissions. In particular, it plans to establish an autonomous vehicle demonstration complex based on an open platform to conduct autonomous vehicle testing and technological research.
