Prevents traffic accidents by warning the car behind you when braking suddenly
Can be used without purchasing separate equipment or paying monthly fees

SK Telecom announced that it has commercialized 'T Map V2X (Vehicle to Everything),' a technology that warns the following vehicles of signs of an accident ahead, on its mobile navigation T Map.

T Map V2X is a technology that alerts drivers of vehicles following within a distance of up to 1 km by displaying a warning message on their T Map screens when a preceding T Map vehicle brakes suddenly. Even if the driver behind cannot see the road ahead, they can slow down according to the signal to avoid a collision.

T Map V2X's artificial intelligence uses smartphone motion sensors, GPS information, and big data to determine whether a vehicle is braking suddenly. When SK Telecom's connected car platform, Smart Fleet, detects this, it tracks the following vehicle and sends a warning. The entire process is carried out via the LTE network.

The range varies depending on the road characteristics, sending a warning to vehicles behind within 100m on general roads or sections with low average speeds, and notifying vehicles behind up to 1km on highways.



To this end, SK Telecom analyzed big data such as average speed, slope, and turning angle for each road and divided the roads nationwide into 5.8 million sections. Additionally, the time characteristic of calculating a long warning transmission range will be reflected to reduce the risk of speeding, such as at night when there is less vehicle traffic.

To use 'T Map V2X,' you can download the latest version of T Map from One Store or Google Play without any separate equipment purchase or usage fees. Warning pop-ups will only appear when T Map is running.

SK Telecom is gradually expanding its services to help customers become familiar with the new technology. "T Map V2X" will initially be available on national highways and metropolitan expressways, with national and general roads gradually expanding to other areas. Initially, a warning pop-up will appear at the bottom of the T Map screen, with notification sounds to be added in the future.

According to the 2016 Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS), approximately 220,000 traffic accidents occurred in Korea in 2016, with the fatality rate in highway accidents reaching approximately 6.3%. SK Telecom expected that "T Map V2X" would reduce these accidents.

Camera- and sensor-based safety devices, such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Forward Collision Warning Systems (FCWS), help prevent rear-end collisions with the car immediately ahead. T Map V2X can detect hazards up to 1 km ahead, making it useful in inclement weather or when visibility is limited due to large vehicles ahead. Combining camera- and sensor-based technologies with V2X can dramatically reduce the risk of accidents.

SK Telecom is also preparing various services that utilize 'T Map V2X', such as emergency vehicles sending 'clear the way' alarms to the car in front or 'be careful on the shoulder' alarms. It also plans to connect to the 5G commercial network.

SK Telecom ICT Technology Research Center Director Park Jin-hyo said, “For the past two years, we have been developing vehicle communication technology that is fast, accurate, and takes customer safety into consideration,” and “We will utilize the big data and user experience acquired through T Map V2X to improve the safety of autonomous vehicles.”
