SK Telecom showcases 'Perfect 5G' in Barcelona

SK Telecom will participate in MWC2018, held for four days starting from the 26th (local time) in Barcelona, Spain, and will conduct active 5G diplomacy activities.
At the 'Fira Gran Via' exhibition venue where this year's MWC is being held, approximately 2,300 ICT companies from 208 countries around the world will showcase mobile technologies representing their respective nations.
SK Telecom has prepared a dedicated exhibition space of 604㎡ in Hall 3 under the theme of 'Perfect 5G'. This marks the 9th year of operating a dedicated exhibition hall. A 5-meter-high 'Kinetic Display' with screens that physically move up and down will be installed at the front of the exhibition space.
SK Telecom will exhibit various 5G technologies ahead of commercialization and plans to showcase the 5G era ahead of others. First, it will exhibit over 10 advanced network technologies leading the telecommunications industry.
Together with global telecommunications equipment companies including Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, and Qualcomm, SK Telecom will introduce 5G wireless transmission technology based on 3GPP's 5G NSA (Non-Standalone, simultaneous 5G-LTE interworking) standard. For reference, SK Telecom successfully conducted the world's first demonstration with Ericsson and Qualcomm in December last year.
▲'5G-LTE heterogeneous network interworking' that seamlessly transmits data across LTE frequency band 2.6GHz and 5G frequency bands 3.5GHz and 28GHz for the first time in the world ▲'5G-PON' that connects 5G central base stations and distributed base stations without separate power supply will also be exhibited.
Visitors can glimpse the future of artificial intelligence through 'hologram artificial intelligence (AI)'. Through 5G, humanity will experience artificial intelligence with communication capabilities that surpass existing voice conversation levels.
SK Telecom will exhibit a 5G autonomous vehicle that actually operated at K-City in early February. The autonomous vehicle's movement through K-City will be recreated in video format, and more advanced autonomous driving technologies including ▲V2X (Vehicle to Everything) that detects pedestrians and front collision situations ▲three-dimensional HD maps will be introduced.
Five startups to lead the 5G era will also participate jointly. SK Telecom will prepare separate booths within the exhibition space for three companies selected for 'TEAC Seoul' and two companies in separate collaboration, and will support local business meetings. 'TEAC' is a startup coexistence program operated by SK Telecom with Facebook and global mobile carriers.
Three startups selected for 'TEAC' including 'Optela', 'CoolCloud', and 'Trendceleration' will exhibit ▲low-power optical cable transmission/reception ▲virtualization-based base station connection transmission ▲wireless optical communication data transmission and other network technologies essential for 5G commercialization, respectively.
VR content company 'Reality Reflection' will showcase photorealistic avatar technology. The photorealistic avatar technology was selected as the grand prize winner at the '5G Convergence Service Contest' hosted by SK Telecom and will be applied to the hologram artificial intelligence, which is this MWC exhibition item for SK Telecom.
'Hecas' will introduce a 'Mobile Live Streaming (MLS)' solution that reduces video transmission time. This technology was mounted on SK Telecom's autonomous vehicle at K-City and was utilized for 360-degree video transmission.
President Park Jeong-ho will attend the GSMA (Global Mobile Operators Association) board meeting held on the 25th, the day before the opening, and discuss 5G and IoT collaboration plans with mobile carrier executives worldwide. During the MWC period, he will explore new businesses linked to 5G through individual meetings with global ICT companies.
ICT Technology Director Park Jin-hyo will start a schedule meeting with CTOs (Chief Technology Officers) of mobile carriers belonging to GSMA from the 23rd before the MWC opening, and will seek various 5G technology collaboration methods with diverse companies.

SKT Teams Up with Alibaba to Chart the New ICT Era

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
