Smack, remote power inspection 'KEPCO business contract'
Published2018.02.27 12:11Smac announced that it has succeeded in the bid for the 'PLC modem supply for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) construction project' commissioned by Korea Electric Power Corporation. The contract size is approximately KRW 5.9 billion, an increase of KRW 4.7 billion from the previous year, and the supply period is until February 2019.
Through this contract, Smack will supply three types of PLC (power line communication) modems, which are core modules of the AMI business, and plans to supply products for the third region, which is classified into Gangwon, South Chungcheong, North Chungcheong, South Jeolla, and North Jeolla regions.
The AMI project is a representative Korean smart grid project that installs a modem in an existing digital power meter to enable two-way communication to check electricity usage. The plan is to build infrastructure for about 20 million households using electricity by 2020, and to carry out the project targeting about 4 million households this year.
Since 2016, the company has been supplying PLC modems and core components to KEPCO by transferring PLC modem-related technology from PLC chip manufacturer INC Technology (hereinafter INC). This year, it has also received an order to supply three types of PLC modems.
The company is also generating revenue by manufacturing and supplying a remote monitoring console modem (BCDMA) for the remote metering data DCU (centralized unit), which is one of the core equipment of the AMI business, to DCU manufacturers.
Choi Young-seop, CEO of Smac, said, “This project order is a reflection of the company’s excellent core technologies and optimized demand-oriented customized services,” adding, “Smac will do its best to supply good products for the national project to expand the smart power grid and provide new power services.”

TI Launches Ultra-Small 36V 1A DC/DC Step-Down Power Module
TI announced the launch of two new 4V–36V power module products that measure only 3.0mm x 3.8mm and require just two external components. The 0.5A LMZM23600 and 1A LMZM23601 DC/DC step-down converters achieve maximum efficiency of 92% to minimize energy loss, and by employing ultra-compact MicroSiP packaging, board space can be reduced by up to 58%. By adding these converter products to TI's power module portfolio, the company now addresses the requirements of space-constrained industrial and communications designs targeting 1A-class performance, such as field transmitters, ultrasonic scanners, and network security cameras.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
