Creating new markets for media art and digital signage through deregulation

A digital media cluster will be created centered around Sangam DMC.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Seoul Metropolitan Government signed a business agreement to revitalize the Sangam DMC Media Cluster. This will allow for the gradual implementation of pilot services linking cutting-edge ICT such as 5G and IoT, as well as the creation of specialized digital signage streets.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has been sparing no investment and support to develop Sangam DMC into a cutting-edge media cluster, starting with the construction of Nuri Dream Square in 2005, and continuing with support for content venture companies to move in and the opening of KoVAC (Korea VR AR Complex) in 2017.

Now, Sangam DMC needs to evolve into an intelligent city that actively responds to the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and solves various urban problems such as transportation, environment, and safety by utilizing cutting-edge ICT such as virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR), 5G, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

To this end, we plan to create a new market for media art/digital signage by easing various regulations centered on the pedestrian-only road (Digital Media Street) of Sangam DMC in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and support the linkage of cutting-edge ICT such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Yang Hwan-jeong, Director of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Information and Communication Policy Bureau, said, “We plan to strengthen mutual cooperation between the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Seoul Metropolitan Government so that Sangam DMC can present a smart city model centered on media functions in name and reality,” adding, “Through this, cutting-edge ICT will be able to solve various urban problems such as transportation, environment, and safety in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and further contribute to the creation of new markets and quality jobs for young people.”
