SK Telecom Showcases Advanced ICT Technology at Professional Baseball Opening Ceremony First Pitch
Published2018.03.26 10:16SK Telecom announced that it integrated cutting-edge ICT technology into the first pitch event at the professional baseball opening game between SK Wyverns and Lotte Giants held at Incheon SK Happy Dream Park.
Lee Jung-hoon, a sixth-grader from Dongmak Elementary School in Incheon who threw the first pitch, successfully completed the first pitch with the assistance of SK Telecom's autonomous vehicle and hologram AI avatar 'Lily'. The scene of him moving aboard the autonomous vehicle for the first pitch was transmitted via 5G network and broadcasted live through 'Big Board', the world's largest-scale scoreboard installed in the outfield of SK Park.
The first pitch event with ICT technology began from the waiting room before the event. Lee received guidance from hologram AI avatar 'Lily' in the waiting room, where he conversed with her about how to move to the mound.
'Lily' is the name of the avatar that appears in 'HoloBox', a hologram-based AI speaker that SK Telecom unveiled at MWC 2018 in February.
When Lee boarded the autonomous vehicle to move to the mound, 'Lily' reappeared on a tablet installed inside the vehicle. While the autonomous vehicle was moving, 'Lily' encouraged Lee, telling him not to be nervous and to throw the ball with joy and cheering him on.
SK Telecom's autonomous vehicle departed from the left gate on the outfield side with Lee aboard, moved between third base and home plate. After dropping off Lee, the autonomous vehicle turned around near home and exited to its starting point.
The entire process from 'Lily's' encouragement to the safe autonomous driving was transmitted to 'Big Board' through 5G network, allowing all spectators to view it.
SK Telecom constructed a 5G network inside SK Park using the 28GHz frequency band. Additionally, the company is promoting 5G competitiveness by rolling out its new 5G campaign "This is 5G", which was unveiled on the 21st, throughout the baseball stadium.
After completing the first pitch, Lee Jung-hoon said, "Conversing with 'Lily' felt like talking to a real person," and "It felt like I had come to the future."
Park Jin-hyo, Head of ICT Technology at SK Telecom, stated, "We prepared the first pitch event to showcase cutting-edge ICT technology at a baseball stadium where many customers visit," and added, "SK Telecom will continue to present future scenarios that ICT technologies such as 5G and autonomous driving will create."

SKT Upgrades Hybrid IoT Network with 'LTE cat.M1' Deployment
SK Telecom announced the completion of 'LTE Cat.M1' construction, a nationwide IoT network following its 'LoRa' network, and disclosed plans for commercialization in April, upgrading its existing 'hybrid IoT network'.
