ST, Launches Software Package to Drive Amazon Alexa Voice Recognition Service
Published2018.04.04 14:52STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched the X-CUBE-AVS software package that enables Amazon's Alexa Voice Service (AVS) to run on its STM32 microcontrollers.
This software package enables the implementation of advanced interactive user interfaces using cloud-based intelligence such as automatic speech recognition and natural language understanding in simple connected devices such as smart home appliances, home automation devices, and office products.
X-CUBE-AVS is an extension package of the STM32Cube software platform and is equipped with readily available libraries and open-source routines, making it easier to port the AVS Software Development Kit (SDK) to microcontrollers. In addition, it includes application examples that simplify the complex software layers required for developers to host AVS on embedded devices. Since X-CUBE-AVS is the first package specialized for microcontrollers, developers can easily leverage Alexa technology in projects across more diverse fields, unlike conventional expensive application processor solutions that typically consume more power.
This software handles lower-layer communication and AVS server connections, provides application-specific services, and encapsulates the AVS protocol to enable easier application implementation. For connection management, it features a Persistent-Token Mechanism that enables direct recovery from connection loss without the need to repeat user authentication. Additionally, it provides a software test harness for durability testing, allowing simulation of events such as network disconnection to test the robustness and validate user applications.
X-CUBE-AVS is provided with demo examples for the STM32F769 Discovery Kit, which demonstrates how to connect a simple smart speaker to AVS using the board configuration interface included in the software. X-CUBE-AVS can be used with other STM32F7 microcontrollers or any STM32 device with CPU performance and memory suitable for running the AVS SDK.

The module is suitable for 3 to 30KW applications including industrial motor drives, air conditioning, photovoltaic generators, welders, battery chargers, UPS controllers, and electric vehicles. ST's space-efficient low-profile ACEPACK technology combines high power density and reliability in an economical plastic package. The technology simplifies assembly by employing an optional solder-free press-fit connection method instead of conventional soldering pins, and provides metal screw clamps for fast and reliable mounting.

The device extends battery life while delivering new features and improved performance to enhance the end-user experience. The STM32WB wireless SoC device integrates an Arm Cortex-M4-based microcontroller with full capabilities to run key applications, and an Arm Cortex-M0+ core that offloads the main processor and can operate BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) 5 and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless functionality in real-time.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation. The company explained that it reduces the limitations of existing security operations centers, which have had to forgo some data due to high cost structures, and enables large-scale data analysis and automation based on open formats and ecosystems. LakeWatch is currently offered as a private preview, with Adobe and Dropbox mentioned as early customers. Databricks also announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic as well as the acquisition of Antimatter and SiftD.ai.
