Sonет, an autonomous driving startup, has obtained temporary operation permit
Published2018.05.04 11:17Small and medium-sized enterprises can now actively enter the autonomous driving development sector. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has granted temporary operation permit for Sonет's autonomous vehicles, an AI-specialized startup focused on autonomous driving.
This is the first time a small or medium-sized enterprise has received temporary operation permit for an autonomous vehicle using self-developed components. With Sonет's temporary operation approval, 45 autonomous vehicles can now operate across the country.
Sonет is a company founded by researchers from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), and is developing software necessary for autonomous driving and conducting education and consulting services.
Sonет's autonomous vehicle is equipped with self-developed software that processes image data recognized by cameras to control the vehicle, and utilizes a self-developed lane recognition method (hereinafter referred to as algorithm).
Sonет plans to develop an autonomous driving standard-based platform where autonomous driving algorithms can be freely tested, and to develop autonomous driving kits (complete system packages) that enable autonomous driving.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport introduced the temporary operation permit system ('16. 2.) to support private sector technology development, and has supported actual road testing for research purposes by providing precision road maps required for autonomous driving at no cost.
An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated, "We expect this approval will invigorate technological development for autonomous driving among domestic small and medium-sized enterprises," and added, "We plan to actively support innovative domestic autonomous driving startups in freely conducting research and development, and to provide platforms for collaboration and cooperation with various companies."

Domestic Autonomous Vehicle Roadmap Must Be Drawn Together with the Public and Private Sectors
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is advancing autonomous vehicles to Level 4 and 5, which enable fully autonomous driving by 2022, and is moving beyond early commercialization toward widespread adoption. Major companies such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Honda, Toyota, and Ford are pursuing commercialization of autonomous vehicles targeting 2020. Major developed countries including the United States, Europe, and Japan are establishing smart infrastructure tailored to traffic characteristics by city and accelerating commercialization timelines. Accordingly, domestic private enterprises, government, and national agencies are focusing on 'safety' and working to develop autonomous cooperative driving integrated with infrastructure. Kim Chang-gi, assistant director at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated at the 2018 International Future Automobile Forum that "the government is establishing the foundation for commercialization this year, targeting the commercialization of Level 3 autonomous vehicles capable of autonomous driving during specific periods by 2020, and the expansion of Level 4 and 5 based autonomous vehicles by 2022."

An international standardization conference on intelligent transportation systems for autonomous vehicles was held.
The 51st International Standardization Conference in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ISO TC 204), hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, was held. At this conference, experts from 28 countries worldwide and approximately 200 domestic and international professionals participated to discuss international standard development and promotion strategies in the intelligent transportation systems field. Korea plans to advance 16 types of international standards in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field at this conference, and through these efforts, aims to secure international standard leadership in autonomous cooperative driving and road information technology (IT) infrastructure.

TI Unveils Multi-Axis Coreless Current Sensor TMCS2100-Q1 for HEV/EV Traction Inverters
Texas Instruments has unveiled the TMCS2100-Q1, a multi-axis coreless Hall-effect current sensor for HEV and EV traction inverters.
