Analog Devices Announces Industry's First Precision Operational Amplifier Supporting Input Overvoltage Protection of ±30V or More

August 10, 2011 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors and a leader in the worldwide data converter market, today introduced the ADA4096-2 Dual Precision Micropower Operational Amplifier, the industry's first precision operational amplifier (Op Amp) with over-voltage protection (OVP) of ±30V or higher. Thanks to this industry-leading built-in input OVP, which features overvoltage protection up to 32V levels above and below the power rail, analog designers using the ADA4096-2 can reduce overall product development time, component costs, and board space by eliminating the need for external OVP solutions or minimizing component usage. Additionally, the ADA4096-2 improves overall system accuracy and facilitates error budgeting and analysis, thereby reducing system errors caused by various errors and uncontrolled error sources that can occur with external input OVP configurations. The ADA4096-2 consumes very little power, with only 60μA per amplifier, and offers twice the bandwidth and half the voltage noise compared to competing products. Therefore, it is suitable for applications requiring precise signal processing, high accuracy, and ultra-low power consumption, such as industrial sensors. Typical examples include process control where voltage levels can suddenly drop or rise, highly integrated or loop-driven industrial devices, and battery-powered medical devices.

Operational amplifiers can be damaged if a monitoring signal is input while the power is off. For this reason, the input OVP of the ADA4096-2 is designed to maintain an operating state even when power is not supplied. This specification protects the input during power on/off sequencing, as well as during low-power sleep and standby operation modes, and ensures that the entire electrical system operates continuously.
Based on a special design, the ADA4096-2 can achieve a Unity Gain of 800 kHz. This new operational amplifier achieves high DC precision regardless of temperature variations, based on a low offset voltage of 35 μV (typ) and a temperature drift of 1 μV/°C (typ). Consequently, frequent calibration is not required to improve measurement accuracy. In addition, the ADA4096-2 provides excellent accuracy with voltage noise of 27 nV/vHz under operating conditions across the entire industrial temperature range (−40°C to +125°C) extended with a single voltage supply of 3 V to 30 V.
