Launch of the first multi-material multi-cell battery gas gauge product for lithium batteries
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) July 4, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon) has launched the first product in a family of multi-material, multi-cell battery management gas gauge circuits utilizing its proprietary Impedance Track™ capacitance measurement technology. This power management chip, the bq34z100, is the industry's first gas gauge product available for various types of lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries in 2 to 16-cell battery packs, extending battery life in applications such as medical equipment, power tools, e-bikes, and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Suppliers). TI also plans to introduce new gas gauge products for lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and nickel-hydrogen batteries later this year. Excellent capacity measurement
The design of multi-cell lithium batteries used in portable industrial equipment and medical equipment today requires superior measurement technology to more accurately measure remaining battery capacity. The bq34z100 battery gas gauge determines the condition of the battery using battery voltage measurement and impedance track technology utilizing battery characteristics and properties, and maintains the precision of accurate capacity measurement up to 94% over the entire battery life. In addition, this product operates regardless of the series cell configuration and can reduce power consumption by using an external voltage conversion circuit.

Supply and Price
Currently, the bq34z100, a multimaterial fuel gauge product for lithium-based batteries, is available in a 14-pin 5mm x 6mm TSSOP package and is priced at $2.1 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities. The bq34z110, a battery gauge product for lead-acid batteries, is scheduled for release in the third quarter of this year, and new gauge products for NiCd and NiMH batteries are scheduled to be announced at the end of this year.
