Maxim's highly integrated optical sensor that measures RGB, ambient light, proximity motion, infrared, and temperature
San Jose, CA—July 10, 2012—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) has launched four new digital optical sensors that go beyond analog integration with sensor fusion.
The MAX44004/05/06/08 measure RGB (red/green/blue) light levels, ALS (ambient visible light), proximity to the sensor, ambient infrared (IR) levels, and temperature. Up to seven sensors are integrated into a single ultra-small optical package. The sensors provide accurate and repeatable measurements, and the MAX44005/MAX44006/MAX44008 each consume the industry's lowest 20µA. Their high integration reduces system costs and the number of external components, while significantly simplifying design. These optical sensors can be used in a wide range of applications, such as smartphones, tablets, portable consumer electronics, displays, digital light management, security systems, and medical devices.
Optical sensor with a significantly enhanced level of integration
* MAX44004 is a low-power ALS that consumes only 5µA.
* MAX44006/MAX44008 integrates ALS (clear), ambient IR, and temperature sensors in addition to RGB color sensors.
In addition to the RGB color sensor, the MAX44005 integrates ALS (clear), ambient IR, IR proximity, and temperature sensors.
comment
Chae Lee, Senior Vice President of Maxim’s Mobility Group, stated, “We are moving toward an era where everything is connected, with sensors embedded everywhere and technology disappearing from the forefront,” adding, “Our goal is for sensors to expand into a natural part of ourselves.”
Temperature range and package
* MAX44005/MAX44006/MAX44008 operates in a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
* MAX44004 operates in a temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.
All sensors are provided in a 2mm x 2mm x 0.6mm optical package.
