Easier Multicore Programming: TI Provides New Multicore Evaluation Module for Keystone-based DSP TMS320C665x to Support Rapid Design
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) July 12, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon) announced that it is providing two new evaluation modules (EVMs) for its Keystone-based TMS320C665x multicore digital signal processors (DSPs) to achieve a simpler development process using high-performance multicore processors. With the TMDSEVM6657L and TMDSEVM6657LE EVMs, designers can quickly get started with designs using TI's latest processors, such as the TMS320C6654, TMS320C6655, and TMS320C6657. TI's C665x multicore processors integrate fixed-point and floating-point features to deliver real-time high performance in a smaller form factor under low-power conditions, enabling developers to more effectively meet market requirements such as mission-critical, industrial automation, testing, embedded vision, imaging, video surveillance, medical, and audio-video infrastructure. “TI’s goal has always been to make multicore programming more accessible and convenient for developers,” said Ramesh Kumar, Manager of TI’s Multicore Processor Business Unit. “By providing the new low-cost C665x EVM, TI enables its Keystone devices to be applied to smaller and more portable products.” “This enables developers to utilize multicores in a wider variety of high-performance and portable applications,” he said.
TI's TMDSEVM6657L is available for $349, and the TMDSEVM6657LE is available for $549. Both EVMs include the free MCSDK (Multicore Software Development Kit), TI's CCS (Code Composer Studio™) integrated development environment, and application/demo code suites, enabling programmers to quickly accelerate new platforms. Furthermore, TI's TMDSEVM6657L includes the embedded XDS100 emulator, while the TMDSEVM6657LE includes the high-speed emulator XDS560V2, supporting faster program loading and ease of use.
TI's C665x processors are available at a price of less than $30 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities, enabling developers to access power- and space-efficient, high-performance devices. Their low power consumption characteristics and small 21mm x 21mm form factor support portability, mobility, and low-power energy sources such as batteries, providing a power delivery interface capable of driving innovative products. The C6657 features two 1.25GHz DSP cores, delivering up to 80 GMACs and 40 GFLOPs of performance, while the C6655 and C6654 single-core solutions deliver up to 40 GMACs and 20 GFLOPs, and 27.2 GMACs and 13.6 GFLOPs of performance, respectively. Under normal operating conditions, the power characteristics of the C6657, C6655, and C6654 are 3.5W, 2.5W, and 2W, respectively. TI's C665x DSP is also optimized for a variety of high-performance portable applications by providing large on-chip memory that works in conjunction with a high-bandwidth, efficient external memory controller.
