South Korea Selected as No. 1 Country for Global 5G Leadership

ADL 5G National Leadership Index
Global management consulting firm Arthur D. Little (ADL) announced on the 1st the results of its evaluation of 5G commercialization leadership by country across 40 countries worldwide.
ADL selected South Korea, which showcased the world's first 5G pilot service at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and launched the world's first commercial 5G service, as the 'Most advanced in 5G Leadership'.
In the report, ADL conducted an in-depth analysis of the status of technology infrastructure and services by country regarding 5G commercialization. In the Infrastructure Availability section, it assessed 5G frequency allocation and the status of capital investment, while in the Commercialization Tendency section, it comprehensively evaluated the status and success level of 5G pilot services and the R&D investment rate relative to GDP.
As a result, Korea was evaluated as a 'Clear Leader'. Following Korea, eight countries including the United States, Australia, Switzerland, and Finland were selected as 5G leader nations.

5G, with its ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and hyper-connectivity, is becoming the new wing of smart factories.
MWC19 was abuzz with interest in 5G. 5G possesses ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and hyper-connectivity characteristics that will transform environments not only in media but across all sectors. Domestic mobile carriers, three in total, successively unveiled smart factory solutions utilizing 5G, laying the groundwork for full-scale convergence between 5G and smart factories. SK Telecom's Supernova can analyze diverse content including video footage captured by cameras, existing media files, and images detected by sensors in industrial equipment. LG U+ unveiled 5G-based smart factory services. KT adopted O-RAN standards, an open 5G network standard. Through O-RAN specifications, telecommunications operators can construct networks with optimal base station equipment combinations tailored to their specific 5G network deployment scenarios.

KT to Build 5G Edge Communication Centers in Eight Cities Nationwide
KT는 제주도를 포함한 전국 8개 주요 도시에 모바일 에지 컴퓨팅 기술을 적용한 5G 에지 통신센터 구축을 완료했다. 기존 무선 데이터 처리 방식에서는 전국에서 발생하는 사용자의 데이터 트래픽이 모두 수도권의 중앙통신센터로 전송되어 데이터를 처리하는 구조였기 때문에 지연이 생길 수밖에 없었다. KT는 이런 지연을 최소화하기 위해 5G 에지 통신 센터에 데이터 처리 장치를 구축, 사용자의 단말에서 발생하는 데이터 트래픽을 사용자가 인접한 에지 통신센터에서 처리할 수 있도록 구현했다. 지역에서 사용하는 사용자의 데이터 트래픽이 수도권 통신센터까지 전송되지 않고도 해당 지역에서 처리가 가능하기 때문에 데이터 처리 과정에서의 지연이 감소된다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
