The Ministry of Science and ICT held a workshop at the Construction Mutual Aid Association on the 14th for 228 websites out of the top 500 private websites (excluding the financial sector) that still have plugins, in order to support the improvement of plugins (ActiveX, executable files) on private websites.
According to the results of a survey of the top 500 private websites in 2018, ActiveX decreased by 37% compared to the previous year and plugins decreased by 64.7% overall through the transition to web standards or the provision of alternative services without installation (simple payment, app card, etc.).
On the other hand, it was found that 539 plugins, including 465 ActiveX controls, are still being used to provide services such as online payment, multimedia playback, and electronic document viewing on 228 websites.
This workshop was organized to provide private website operators with practical information necessary for plugin improvement, such as methods for transitioning to web standards, actual plugin improvement case studies, and trends in alternative solutions.
First, major issues such as Adobe's discontinuation of Flash technical support in 2020 were explained, and methods for transitioning to web standards for various types of plugins, including electronic payment windows and Flash, were presented based on the 'Guidelines for Improving Plugins on Private Websites.'As actual improvement cases, seven websites that improved their plugins through government support projects were selected, and the methods and processes were shared in detail.
Finally, eight companies presented web browser policy trends, web standard solutions that can replace plugins for electronic payment windows, multimedia, and electronic documents, and methods for their application.
Excessive plugins hinder the website's user experience.
Along with this, this year's government support policies for improving plugins on the top 500 private websites, such as web standard conversion support projects and consulting services, were introduced, and active utilization was encouraged.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to strengthen cooperation with institutions and associations and provide web standard development training to stop the use of Flash in the private sector, and to induce and support plugin improvements through holding meetings with website operators (on a semi-annual basis) and conducting on-site visits.
Kim Jeong-won, Director of Internet Convergence Policy, stated, “Since websites are fundamentally spaces that provide services to users, it is very important to provide not only diverse services but also the best user experience.”
He continued, “However, it is true that while domestic websites cause significant inconvenience in using web services due to the excessive use of plugins, there is still a lack of interest in improvement,” adding, “The Ministry of Science and ICT will continuously organize events until 2020 to share the necessity, methods, and examples of plugin improvement so that the private sector can take an interest and promptly improve plugins. "We will continue to provide support," he stated.

Following technology consultations and agreement execution in mid-March, a project worth a total of 8.7 billion won is scheduled to commence.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
