Initial Artix-7 FPGA Delivery: Extends FPGA Performance to Portable Small Form Factor Applications Previously Not Addressed
Xilinx Korea (General Manager Ahn Hung-sik) July 19, 2012 – Xilinx announced the availability of its Artix™-7 FPGA product family. The new devices extend FPGA technology to applications requiring the performance previously provided by Virtex® FPGAs, while offering a small form factor and low-cost programmable device. Manufacturers of portable medical devices, portable radios, compact base stations, and other specialized application providers who previously lacked the technical infrastructure can now leverage advanced All-Programmable FPGA performance to increase product offerings and expand markets. In portable applications where advanced features are critical, Artix-7 devices deliver superior system performance, power efficiency, small size, and low cost. With the initial availability of the Artix-7 A100T device, both the Xilinx 7 Series and Zynq™-7000 product families are now available in silicon, marking a new chapter in Xilinx's 28-nanometer generation devices.
Dave Myron, FPGA Platform Marketing Director, stated, "Xilinx has introduced the Artix-7 product family to address markets we have not previously served," and added, "With the Artix-7 devices, Xilinx's low-cost product portfolio built on the Spartan® product family, which already holds an important position in 3D TV, automotive infotainment, industrial control, and portable medical device applications, has been expanded."
Xilinx selected TSMC's HPL (High-Performance Low-Power) process for its 28-nanometer generation portfolio, enabling the Artix-7 product family to overcome performance limitations at the lowest power consumption levels. The Artix-7 devices consume 35% less power compared to competing solutions, allowing customers to reduce power consumption in battery-powered applications such as military secure SDR (Software Defined Radio) to single-digit watt levels. Customers can combine the latest encryption IP and modem functionality in a single chip, meeting size requirements while reducing BOM costs. Additionally, integrated DSP performance is exceptionally high, delivering signal processing performance for wideband waveforms exceeding competitors by more than threefold, achieving up to 1,306GMAC.
The Artix-7 product family reduces static power consumption by 65% and dynamic power consumption by 50% compared to previous generation devices, and can provide up to 16 transceivers at 6.6Gb/s. This enables portable ultrasound equipment developers to implement high-resolution imaging compliant with the JESD204B high-speed serial interface standard. Simultaneously, battery life is extended while meeting safety standards, and can implement 128-channel beam former power at 40% lower than alternative FPGAs.
For microwave backhaul equipment developers supporting 4G rollout globally, Artix-7 devices enable integration of modem and packet processing functions into a single device, delivering the highest performance per watt for intelligent bandwidth devices. In markets utilizing single-chip base stations called the "Holy Grail," Artix-7 devices not only achieve integration levels previously unattainable but also provide the programmable performance essential for competing in fields where market growth outpaces technology standardization rates.

Availability Information
