Signing of MOUs for Space Cooperation and Science & Technology Cooperation
Cooperation in promoting the establishment of the Uzbekistan Chemical Research Institute

South Korea and Uzbekistan announced on the 22nd through a summit declaration that they would share South Korea’s experience in the world’s first 5G commercialization and cooperate in jointly responding to the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and expanding opportunities for inclusive innovative growth.

On the 19th, Minister Yoo Young-min of the Ministry of Science and ICT signed a space cooperation MOU with the Ministry of Information, Technology and Communications Development of Uzbekistan and a science and technology cooperation MOU with the Ministry of Innovation Development.

This MOU was concluded in the presence of both leaders as part of the leaders' visit to three Central Asian countries (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan) to promote the New Northern Policy. Based on this, the two countries plan to revitalize mutual cooperation in the fields of space, science and technology, and ICT.

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to first promote mutually beneficial cooperation, such as policy exchanges in the space sector, through the signing of a space cooperation MOU between Korea and Uzbekistan, and, taking this opportunity, strive to promote the installation of a local satellite direct receiver station for images from our multipurpose practical satellite.

Although there have been no direct discussions on space cooperation between the two countries, following the use of the Arirang satellite in the Uzbek electronic geographic information system construction project, follow-up projects for satellite cooperation between the two countries are currently being discussed at the working level, such as the Uzbek side considering the installation of a direct reception station for Korean multipurpose practical satellite imagery.

In addition, through the signing of a science and technology cooperation MOU with Uzbekistan, an opportunity was created to expand cooperation into more diverse fields, including climate technology, renewable energy, and technology commercialization, in addition to the chemical sector in which cooperation is already underway.

Meanwhile, regarding Uzbekistan’s request to our government for support in establishing a chemical research institute, it is expected that cooperation in this field will be further accelerated based on this science and technology cooperation MOU.
