First installed on 4,200 city buses nationwide
Scheduled to expand to 24,000 units by the second half of the year

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that starting May 1, it will launch a public Wi-Fi service on 4,200 city buses nationwide in collaboration with 16 local governments, which anyone can use for free.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has been promoting a public Wi-Fi expansion policy, including installing public Wi-Fi in over 13,000 locations nationwide, to improve citizens' access to information and contribute to reducing communication costs.

Since existing public Wi-Fi is installed in fixed locations such as community centers and traditional markets, making it unusable while on the move, the need to expand it to national public transportation facilities has been raised.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT is pursuing a project to install public Wi-Fi on 24,000 city buses nationwide by the end of the year, with local governments sharing the budget equally. As a result of the first phase of the project, public Wi-Fi was installed on 4,200 buses nationwide, and official service began on May 1.

If you board a city bus with a public Wi-Fi promotional sticker, check for the identifier (SSID) “PublcWifi@Bus_Free_○○○○” and connect. ○○○○ is the route number of the bus you boarded. Users who want to use high-quality public Wi-Fi services with enhanced security and fast speeds can connect to “PublicWiFi@Bus_Secure_○○○○”.

However, due to the nature of public Wi-Fi services that are accessible to anyone, it is recommended to avoid entering sensitive personal information or conducting financial transactions, even if enhanced security technology is applied.

Lee Tae-hee, Director General of the Telecommunications Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “The government and local governments have joined forces to install public Wi-Fi on 4,200 city buses nationwide, and the service is scheduled to be provided on an additional 20,000 buses in the second half of the year,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure quality control so that high-quality public Wi-Fi services that meet the expectations of many citizens are provided.”
