Load switches provide power efficiency and advanced protection features for mobile and consumer electronics applications.
High-complexity mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics, require perfect power management and battery switching to provide enhanced flexibility and superior reliability. Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS)’s IntelliMAX™ advanced load management switch family enables designers to achieve better system power and reliability while increasing system protection and reducing design complexity.
Fairchild’s comprehensive IntelliMAX smart load switch portfolio can handle diverse applications utilizing multi-channel configurations and high-voltage and high-current loads through features such as slew rate control to prevent inrush current, overcurrent limiting, thermal shutdown protection, reverse current interruption, and low operating input voltages. As an extension of the IntelliMAX series, it addresses the dynamic power challenges of lighting industrial applications through one-chip solutions that provide designers with off-the-shelf performance, reduced component count, and increased efficiency for their designs.
For smart devices and portable storage devices requiring high current performance and low ON resistance for power path management, the FPF1039 and FPF1048 switches provide ON-resistances of 20mΩ and 23mΩ, input voltage ranges of 1.2V–5.5V and 1.5V–5.5V, and demonstrated a very low shutdown current drain to support compatibility in low standby current applications. The optimized slew rate-controlled turn-on characteristic of TR = 2.7mS prevents voltage drop on the supply rail through a bulk capacitor of up to 200µF. The FPF1048 product also provides a True Reverse Current Block to prevent unnecessary reverse power regardless of whether the device is operating.
Fully functional load switches with adjustable current limiting capabilities, such as the FPF2165R and FPF2195, are optimized for applications using physical connectors, such as USB and HDMI™ devices, capable of handling high current conditions. Input power control can be easily adjusted through current limiting using an external resistor that provides reverse current cutoff to prevent unnecessary reverse current when the device is switched off. The device operates in constant current mode to prevent current damage and maintain the limited current even if the current limiting function fails.
The FPF1320 and FPF1321 are suitable for wireless charging applications using a DISO (dual-input single-output) load switch and perform complete power switching between two input power rails via an advanced SEL pin that supports advanced break-before-make operation. These devices are designed to directly interface with low-voltage control signal GPIO (General Purpose Input Output) applications.
