ADI's 8-channel ultrasonic receiver, the industry's first equipped with digital I/Q demodulation and decimation filters, reduces processor overhead in ultrasonic systems
July 26, 2012 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com , NASDAQ: ADI), a global leader in high-performance signal processing technology and data converters, today unveiled the industry's first 8-channel ultrasonic receiver with integrated on-chip digital I/Q demodulation and decimation filtering capabilities. ADI's AD9670 is the first ultrasonic receiver capable of conditioning eight channels of data from RF to baseband frequencies by integrating demodulation and decimation functions, reducing the processing load on the system FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) by more than 50% compared to competitor receivers. In addition, the AD9670 integrates a low-noise amplifier (LNA), variable gain amplifier (VGA), anti-aliasing filter (AAF), and 14-bit A/D converter (ADC), and delivers improved ultrasound image quality by providing the industry's best sample rate (125 MSPS) and best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance (75 dB). The new 8-channel receiver is the latest addition to Analog Devices' award-winning receiver portfolio and is designed for mid-range and high-end portable and cart-mounted ultrasound systems.
The digital I/Q demodulator, programmable oscillator, and 16-tap FIR (Finite-Impulse Response) decimation filter integrated into the AD9670 reduce the FPGA's data bandwidth requirements, allowing designers to replace the processor with a less expensive product or reallocate processing bandwidth to other system functions. Additionally, the new receiver provides a continuous wave (CW) processing path to the analog I/Q demodulator, which removes up to the 13th harmonic, enabling designers to reduce the number of filter components, thereby lowering system costs and design complexity while increasing signal sensitivity. The dynamic range of the CW mode output is 160 dBc/√Hz or more per channel.
In addition, the AD9670 8-channel receiver supports a 30 MHz anti-aliasing filter frequency and a 125 MSPS A/D converter sample rate, achieving 3 dB higher SNR performance than competitor products. This 14-bit A/D converter provides a programmable clock, data alignment, and programmable digital test pattern generation as well as fixed and pseudo-random patterns input via the serial port interface, along with custom user-defined test patterns as standard. The total power is 130mW per channel, and the 8-channel low-noise amplifier reduces the input referred noise to an average level of 0.78nV/√Hz at 5MHz (gain = 21.3dB).
