Public-private cooperation measures discussed to secure a leading position in the 5G convergence service market and strengthen competitiveness

On the 16th, Min Won-ki, the 2nd Vice Minister of Science and ICT, held a public-private meeting at Hotel Peito Gangnam in Seocho-dong, Seoul, regarding plans to foster 5G V2X, one of the 10 core industries of the 5G+ strategy, and autonomous vehicles and smart cities, among the 5 core services.

This meeting was organized as a follow-up to the 5G+ strategy announced on April 8, and was designed to strengthen public-private cooperation to secure technological and service competitiveness in the fields of 5G V2X, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities based on feedback from the field.

The meeting proceeded in the order of first presenting on the 5G+ strategy and the current status of policies related to 5G V2X, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities, the current status of 5G convergence services (autonomous driving, smart cities), and measures to revitalize 5G-based smart cities, followed by listening to on-site opinions and difficulties regarding these matters.

The participants agreed that among the 5G+ strategic industries, the fields of 5G V2X, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities are key sectors that will accelerate the spread of 5G services and drive the rapid growth of 5G-related markets.

At the same time, 5G mobile communication will enable safer cooperative autonomous driving by providing ultra-low latency communication between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure.He suggested the need to secure core technologies and lead standardization for building a 5G V2X infrastructure environment.

It was also suggested that the discovery and demonstration of differentiated, large-scale autonomous driving service models utilizing 5G technology, which the public can experience firsthand and which can create an early market, should be promoted.

Regarding the smart city sector, discussions were held on the need to discover various 5G-based services and to rapidly develop national pilot cities, such as Sejong 5-1 Living Area and Busan Eco Delta City, into testbeds for 5G+ industries and services, including intelligent CCTV, drones, autonomous vehicles, and immersive content.

Vice Minister Min Won-ki emphasized, “5G is a core infrastructure that promotes the creation of new industries, such as innovative convergence services, and by successfully commercializing 5G for the first time in the world, Korea has secured an opportunity to preempt the new convergence market.”

He added, “To secure world-class competitiveness in the fields of 5G V2X, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities, we will respond promptly to market demands, such as identifying public-private cooperation projects and improving regulations.”
