Supporting the rapidly growing wearable device market with next-generation Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) application software
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) July 27, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon), a leader in Wireless Connectivity solutions, has released BLE Stack 1.2, the latest model of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) application software based on Bluetooth v4.0. The release of BLE Stack 1.2 is expected to further accelerate the growth of the Bluetooth Smart and Smart Ready device market, such as wearable devices. The wearable device market is a rapidly growing industry as manufacturers increasingly utilize smartphones and tablet PCs equipped with Bluetooth v4.0. Furthermore, this new BLE Stack supports 14 sample application profiles, shortening development time for BLE-compatible sensor devices. All customers using TI's CC254x BLE System-on-Chip (SoC) solution can use BLE Stack 1.2 for free. The BLE Stack, CC254x SoC family, and development kits are available immediately at www.ti.com/ble-pr . Volker Prueller of TI delivered a keynote speech on the growth of wearable devices using wireless connectivity technology at the Wearable Technologies Conference held in San Francisco on July 24.
TI's BLE Stack 1.2 provides Master-Slave switching capabilities ahead of competitors to deliver more effective services to the rapidly growing Bluetooth Low Energy wearable device market. Additionally, expanded stack configurability and power consumption optimization enable the design of low-power, single-chip products equipped with Bluetooth Smart features. The latest Master-Slave switching feature simplifies applications for switching between master and slave modes, allowing the CC254x SoC to split operation time between master and slave modes, enabling a single CC254x SoC to support both master and slave simultaneously. For example, a Bluetooth Smart sports watch (peripheral device) using the CC254x is connected to a Bluetooth Smart Ready smartphone (central device). Then, by switching the same sports watch to central device mode, data can be acquired from other peripheral devices, such as heart rate monitors or blood pressure monitors.
Hamid Abdollahi, CTO of Recon Instruments, stated, “TI’s CC2540 Bluetooth Low Energy SoC has significantly enhanced the real-time user experience of the MOD Live Heads-up Display (HUD) through Recon’s wireless connectivity technology. By connecting the HUD mounted on the alpine goggles to an Android smartphone, users can check caller ID and SMS messages right in front of them and navigate music playlists without taking the phone out of their pockets.” "Also, there is no need to worry about battery life," he said.
TI's Bluetooth Low Energy devices provide a truly integrated one-chip solution when used in sensor applications. When used with TI's protocol stack, profile software, and sample applications, it enables the use of a single-mode Bluetooth Low Energy solution that is more flexible for development and cost-effective. Along with the solution, TI provides a comprehensive range of development tools, technical documentation, reference designs, and application expertise to simplify design and accelerate time-to-market.
"With the growing market demand for Low Energy Bluetooth alongside the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablet PCs, TI is leading the development of the wearable and sensor-based device markets by providing a solution that allows for simple switching between master and slave modes with a single BLE single-mode device," said Sid Shaw, Wireless Connectivity Product Marketing Manager at TI. "This enables end users to use smaller Bluetooth devices with more convenient and longer battery life."
