Silicon Labs Supports Friends of Hue Program Ecosystem Partners in Smart Light Switch Development

Silicon Labs and Signify announced today that they are collaborating to enable Friends of Hue program ecosystem partners to develop smart light switches for the Philips Hue system.
“Smart lighting is redefining home automation by enabling simple and affordable DIY solutions,” said Mareca Hatler, research director at ON World. “ZigBee is the leading IoT technology for smart lighting, powering 80% of all smart LED bulbs sold at leading retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Bed Bath and Beyond.”
Silicon Labs provides Zigbee cluster libraries, software tools, reference applications and technical expertise to help Friends of Hue program participants more quickly design and produce light switch products that are guaranteed to be compatible with Philips Hue smart lighting systems.
The Friends of Hue ecosystem enables third-party vendors and brands to create smart lighting products that seamlessly integrate and interoperate with Philips Hue, the leading provider of Zigbee-based smart lighting solutions.
Silicon Labs is working closely with Signify to define a Zigbee cluster and provide compatible software to enable advanced lighting switch features, such as easy-to-use settings in the Philips Hue app or distribution of firmware updates via the Hue Cloud.
Silicon Labs' Zigbee Software Development Kit (SDK) implements the Friends of Hue specification, enabling third-party vendors to build devices certified for Philips Hue operation.
“We believe that smart lighting should be accessible to everyone, and convenient smart lighting control using light switches is central to that vision,” said Duncan McCue, Head of Partnerships at Signify. “We are excited to welcome battery-powered light switches based on Zigbee technology to the Hue ecosystem.”
When end users turn off smart lighting using a traditional wall-mounted switch, the lights lose power and cannot be controlled using apps, voice commands, scheduling, or sensors.
Friends of Hue Switch products can be maintained in constant standby mode by implementing Hue smart lighting control function that can be controlled directly from the wall switch.
Silicon Labs' Friends of Hue SDK enables a variety of smart light switch designs, giving Philips Hue users a wider choice of compatible switch products.
