LG Uplus Adds Google Rooms to 5G Innovation Lab

LG Uplus announced on the 12th that its 'U+ 5G Innovation Lab' has established itself as a key element in revitalizing the 5G ecosystem and fostering mutual growth between large, medium, and small enterprises, with approximately 210 companies utilizing the facility over the past two months. The company also added that it had added 'Google Rooms' to the Innovation Lab on the 10th.

The Innovation Lab, which opened on April 3, was used by nearly 100 small and medium-sized enterprises in April, its first month of operation, and the number of companies using it exceeded 110 in May. Even in June, the number of user companies has steadily increased, with about 30 companies visiting in the first week alone to conduct technology development and service testing.
The Innovation Lab provides an optimal environment where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can easily develop, test, and commercialize technology with just an idea, by receiving not only the 5G network essential for 5G service development and testing but also base station equipment and various devices.
A network zone is provided, equipped with a server room and shield boxes that enable various tests in a 5G network environment by installing commercial 5G base station equipment, allowing for testing in an environment free from interference from external radio waves. In the platform zone, it is possible to test not only smartphones but also various pre-release devices such as HMDs.
LG Uplus opened an additional 'Google Cloud Room' on the 10th, marking two months since the opening of its 5G Innovation Lab. Startups and small and medium-sized enterprises can develop and test various ideas and technologies by utilizing the Google ecosystem and LG Uplus 5G.
At Google Cloud Rooms, anyone can use Google's various devices for free without purchasing them. Small and medium-sized enterprises selected through LG Uplus's screening process can use the Google Cloud Platform for free and take technical training courses to support it. Therefore, it is expected that AI-specialized 5G services can be developed, tested, and commercialized by utilizing Google Cloud Platform’s vision, machine learning, big data analysis, and data storage capabilities.
Choi Chang-kook, Senior Vice President of FC Strategy at LG Uplus, said, “The U+ 5G Innovation Lab has established itself as a core element of the 5G ecosystem, with over 210 small and medium-sized enterprises using it in just over two months since its opening,” adding, “It has become a global model case, with various global companies, including Russia’s largest telecommunications operator MTS and South Africa’s telecommunications operator Lane, visiting to benchmark it.”
He added, “Going forward, we will strengthen open innovation activities to not only revitalize the 5G ecosystem but also strive to provide more benefits to our customers.”

LG Uplus Launches Open Innovation Project at LTE-R Comprehensive Verification Center
LG Uplus has announced that it will launch an open innovation project at its LTE-R comprehensive validation center to drive the evolution of LTE-R technology together with small and medium-sized enterprises. LTE-R, or Integrated Radio Communication for Railways, is a technology for applying LTE, which is 4G mobile communication technology, to railways. It is used to improve aging train radio equipment and efficiently transmit necessary voice, video, and data between running trains, between trains and control centers, and among maintenance personnel. Through this project, LG Uplus will explore ways to link new technologies and solutions with LTE-R that will be applied to existing and newly constructed railway lines. The company aims to strengthen win-win cooperation with small and medium-sized enterprises and startups seeking to enter the LTE-R sector, and enhance the competitiveness of the LTE-R comprehensive validation center.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
