TI Korea (CEO Kent Jun, www.ti.com/ww/kr) August 9, 2012 - TI (CEO Kent Jun) has launched the Piccolo™ microcontroller designed specifically for real-time control and motor control applications. This product enables cost-effective 32-bit real-time control for applications such as home appliances, industrial textile equipment, and compressors. The C2000™ Piccolo™ TMS320F2802x microcontroller not only provides highly integrated analog hardware, but also enables improvements in power efficiency and system protection functionality. These devices, available in sizes as small as 38-pin packages, incorporate advanced architecture and enhanced peripherals, allowing a single chip to replace multiple discrete electronic components while enabling improved power management for motor control applications.
Enhanced System Protection Features
The Piccolo F2802x microcontroller integrates an analog comparator in addition to a 12-bit ADC, allowing designers to conveniently manage power delivery in motor control and digital power systems and protect the system. By utilizing these internal comparators, it is possible to smoothly shut down selected PWM (pulse-width modulation) channels or trigger other events without requiring complex external fault management circuitry.
Power Conversion and Cost-Effective Battery Charging Capability
Additionally, the Piccolo F2802x microcontroller features a high-resolution ePWM (enhanced pulse width modulator) that enables both motor control and efficient power conversion with a single device. Developers can add active PFC (power factor correction) functionality through the effective performance of internal slope compensation implementation using peak current mode control in secondary DC-DC conversion stages, or cost-effective battery charging capability for solar or induction-based systems to their motor control applications.
