Xilinx Korea (Branch Manager Heung-sik Ahn) August 9, 2012 – Xilinx announced that it has increased the maximum processing performance of the Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC product family to 1GHz. Beyond this, smaller form factor packages now enable higher system performance and programmable system integration. This enhancement will significantly increase the value of high-resolution image and graphics processing applications used in medical, aerospace, and defense (A&D markets, as well as wired and wireless computer integrated systems. The Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC is the industry's first tightly integrated hardware-software I/O combined 'All Programmable' device.
Mathias Goertz, hardware project manager at Rohde & Schwarz, stated, "By using Zynq in measurement equipment, we can now place software and hardware much more closely together than before, enabling ultra-compact physical solutions and ultra-compact systems," and added, "When we need to increase processing performance and system development speed, we can easily transfer processing functions to programmable logic, and we are particularly grateful for the remarkable bandwidth performance between FPGA and industry-standard processing systems."
Looking at the new 1GHz performance benchmark, the performance of the two largest Zynq-7000 devices has improved by 25% compared to initial specifications. As a result, the Zynq-7000 product family now meets performance requirements in more sectors than expected, and is particularly anticipated to stand out in advanced image and signal processing systems that must process large amounts of information on a single chip. Customers who previously needed to use multiple chips to meet processing requirements can now optimize their applications and lower BOM by integrating ARM® processing systems and programmable logic while increasing performance and reducing power consumption.
Vidya Rajagopalan, Vice President of Processing Solutions at Xilinx, stated, "The Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC, which combines the accelerated processing power of a processor system and programmable logic operating at 1GHz, delivers processing performance comparable to or superior to competing dual-core solutions with higher processor frequencies and lower power consumption," and explained, "The key to upgrading performance to 1GHz was the selection of TSMC's 28nm HPL process, which is used in the low-power, high-performance 28-nanometer product family."
As Zynq-7045 begins early shipment to customers, Xilinx's All Programmable SoC is becoming the new performance benchmark.
Mike Hodson, President of OmniTek, stated, "We are very pleased to receive the first Zynq-7045 devices and are impressed with Xilinx's Zynq product family. The integrated solution with processor and programmable logic in a single device offers superior advantages in power and size reduction and system performance compared to our existing two-chip design." Roger Fawcett, OmniTek Managing Director, said, "The added 1GHz ARM processing system operating performance runs the necessary headroom GUI while simultaneously operating multiple audio codecs and other real-time processing functions. Our system can also handle up to 8 multiple video streams and enables 10G Ethernet for 12.5 GHz transceiver video," and added, "Accelerating our development depends on how quickly we can port existing software to Zynq using an Eclipse-based software development environment similar to Xilinx's development kit."
Richard Davies, Software Director at OmniTek, further stated, "The key to OmniTek's development was how quickly we could transfer existing software to Zynq using Xilinx's software development kit with an Eclipse IDE, which is the de facto industry standard for similar industries."
In addition to the ARM dual-core Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ processing system with a maximum frequency of 1 GHz, the Zynq-7045, the largest capacity in Xilinx's All Programmable SoC, offers logic exceeding 5 million gates of ASIC (350,000 logic cells), 16 12.5 Gb/s serial transceivers, and 1334 GMACS of DSP performance. The Zynq-7045 device features a hard PCIe® Gen 2 x8 block (PCIe x8 Gen3 can be implemented using softcore in programmable logic) and advanced system integration through high-performance SelectIO™ technology supporting up to 1866 Mb/s for DDR3 and up to 1.6 Gb/s in DDR mode with LVDS.
Additional Small Form Factor Package for Zynq-7010 Device
Xilinx has additionally announced a small 13 x 13mm CLG225 package for the Zynq-7010 device to support programmable system integration in space-constrained products such as industrial motor control, image processing, camera-based driver support systems, portable medical imaging devices, and various consumer products.
Availability
The Zynq-7045 device is currently in early supply to select customers, and broader customer availability is expected in the next quarter. The Zynq-7020 device has been available to customers since December 2011. This product can be ordered through distributors, and faster design is possible when used with the ISE® Design Suite 14.2. Xilinx and members of the Xilinx Alliance Program also supply various development platforms, development tools, and operating systems together, enabling developers to develop software applications faster and more conveniently.
