Sejong City to Launch Autonomous Public Transportation Starting 2021

Sejong City will become a hub city for autonomous driving.
On the 24th, President Moon Jae-in held a meeting with provincial governors, government officials, and corporate representatives at the Nurimaru APEC House in Haeundae, Busan, under the theme of "Special Regulation-Free Zones, the Center of Region-Led Innovative Growth."
At this event, government support plans for Special Regulation-Free Zones, introduced for regional innovation and strategic growth, were announced.
The regions designated as Special Regulatory Free Zones are Gangwon Digital Healthcare, Daegu Smart Wellness, Jeonnam e-Mobility, Chungbuk Smart Safety, Gyeongbuk Next-Generation Battery Recycling, Busan Blockchain, and Sejong Autonomous Driving.

LG Uplus unveiled 5G technology to enhance the safety of autonomous driving and plans for autonomous driving business demonstrations with Sejong Special Self-Governing City.
LG Uplus, putting next-generation intelligent transportation systems (Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems; C-ITS) at the forefront, plans to build and operate an autonomous driving big data control center in collaboration with Sejong City.
In addition, by 2021, it will receive groundbreaking regulatory exemptions to drive Sejong City's innovative growth and lead the demonstration and commercialization of autonomous driving servicesIt aims to foster regulatory free zones.
Specifically, it establishes dynamic precision maps, control centers, big data analysis, and monitoring centers to lay the groundwork for collecting and sharing autonomous driving data. In addition, it promotes an autonomous driving shuttle operation project based on a stable 5G network on general roads, residential complexes, and urban parks within Sejong City.
Choi Joo-sik, Executive Vice President and Head of the Enterprise Business Division at LG Uplus, said, “We are advancing the 5G communication network and control systems essential for demonstration services to create a city specialized in autonomous driving,” adding, “We will focus on the quantitative and qualitative evolution of ICT technology through continuous cooperation so that Sejong City can grow into a hub city for the autonomous driving ecosystem.”

Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in emphasized that regarding Special Regulation-Free Zones, "once demonstration tests are completed, it is necessary to commercialize them so that they can be expanded nationwide and shared with other regions."

The Stencil platform can assist not only urban planning for infrastructure improvement but also parking and traffic management. AllVision in the United States was able to analyze curb occupancy within Pittsburgh's Strip District, known for high on-street parking demand, using data from autonomous vehicle developers together with the Stencil 2-32.
