August 15, 2012, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL, www.freescale.com ) announced today that it is supplying electronic control semiconductors for small internal combustion engines (STEM) in single-cylinder (MC33813) and twin-cylinder (MC33814) applications in transportation, industrial, and consumer electronics. These analog ICs for small engine control are solutions that help customers shorten time-to-market while reducing design complexity, Bill of Materials (BOM), and manufacturing costs. Reliability has been improved and board space has been reduced. These ICs reinforce and expand Freescale’s motorcycle ECU (Electronic Control Unit) reference platform by providing the advantages of additional integration and enhanced diagnostic capabilities while maintaining the MC9S12 microcontroller.
Along with exhaust gas regulations, fuel efficiency and environmental concerns drove the first wave of electronic engine control in passenger cars and trucks in the 1980s. The same conditions are currently driving innovation in the small internal combustion engine market. The small engine market is shifting from mechanical carburetor systems to cleaner and more efficient electronic ignition control and EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) solutions. Engine manufacturers can now precisely schedule engine events and design small, efficient engine control solutions that provide superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and pollution reduction.
"There is a growing trend among small engine manufacturers to deploy electronic engine control solutions, including EFI or e-Carb and electronic ignition systems, in motorcycles, scooters, and power equipment. This is being driven by emission reduction regulations and a global desire for eco-friendliness and energy efficiency," said Gavin Woods, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Freescale's Analog, Complex Signal and Power business unit. Target applications for MC33813 and MC33814 include electronic control systems for 1-cylinder and 2-cylinder gasoline motors used in motorcycles, motorbikes, scooters, and three-wheeled taxis. The device can also be applied to small engine designs used in a wide range of outdoor power equipment, such as lawn mowers, garden tractors, brush cutters, garden trimmers, chainsaws, leaf sweepers, cultivators, generators, and outboard motors.

MC33813 is an engine control analog power IC designed for single-cylinder motorcycles and other small engines, and consists of five integrated low-side drivers and two pre-drivers.
The MC33814 is designed for 2-cylinder engines and consists of 6 integrated low-side drivers and 3 pre-drivers.
Both ICs include a VRS (Variable Magnetic Resistive Sensor) input circuit, a voltage pre-regulator using an external pass transistor, and a total of two 5V internal regulators: one for supplying VCC to the MCU and one for supplying power to the protection sensor. They also include an MCU reset control circuit with monitoring functions, an ISO 9141 K-Line interface for diagnostic communication, and an SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface). The low-side driver can drive up to two fuel injectors, lamps, two relays, or other loads such as a fuel pump and tachometer. The pre-driver can drive IGBT or MOSFET transistors that control the ignition coil and HEGO heater. This device is supplied in a 48-pin LQFP package with exposed pads.
The reference ECU design incorporates extended capabilities for two cylinders. The MC9S12 MCU family will be provided with low-level drivers that utilize extended diagnostic reporting functions via SPI. Additionally, software will be provided to track crank position, read analog sensors, determine fuel quantity and ignition timing, and schedule ignition coils and fuel injectors. The pin-compatible S12EXP calibration device will remain, and a new cost-effective calibration solution using the K-line diagnostic port is under development.

The MC33813 and MC33814 are currently being supplied in sample quantities and are scheduled for mass production in the third quarter of 2013.
