Improperly installed batteries, accidental insertion, incorrect connections, and even compatible third-party USB chargers can all cause dangerous reverse bias, reverse transients, and overvoltage spikes. These issues can lead to device defects or returns, which can reduce revenue and damage a company's reputation. To help protect both electronic devices and their users from these problems, Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a new family of low-power, application-specific reverse polarity protection switches. These devices also feature optional overvoltage transient protection.

These devices feature low resistance, fast response, and nearly 50x lower power consumption at 1A compared to conventional series Schottky solutions, significantly saving power while protecting systems from hazardous reverse polarity conditions. To simplify design and avoid trial-and-error work, these reverse polarity protection switches are optimized for this application and provide an easy-to-use, plug-and-play implementation solution.

Fairchild Semiconductor's reverse polarity protection product family includes the FR011L5J low-side reverse polarity protection device and the FR014H5JZ high-side reverse polarity protection device, which integrates overvoltage transient suppression. When a reverse bias condition occurs, these devices shut down the power supply and completely disconnect the voltage, protecting downstream circuits.

These two protection devices consume less than 0.02W during 1A normal operation and less than 20µW during a 16V reverse bias event—performance levels unattainable using diode solutions. The low power consumption of the FR0XXX5J series minimizes the need for heat sinks and enables smaller package sizes, saving board space and lowering component costs. Furthermore, the nanosecond-level reverse bias shutdown response time of these devices effectively blocks negative transients and other potentially damaging DC events. The FR014H5JZ and FR011L5J devices have been tested and are USB compatible.
