Korea Appointed as Board Member at International Organization for Standardization General Assembly
Published2019.09.23 17:58The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 21st that Korea was elected as a member of the Board of Directors at the 42nd General Assembly of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), held in Cape Town, South Africa, from September 16 to 20.

The ISO Board of Directors is the highest decision-making body responsible for establishing ISO's policies and strategies, and consists of 20 member states, comprising 6 permanent member states (United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, and China) and 14 non-permanent member states. Korea was first elected to the Council in 1993, and this is its seventh appointment.
With its election as a member of the Board of Directors at this General Assembly, Korea will be able to participate proactively in ISO's policy-making process as a member of the ISO Board of Directors from 2020 to 2022.
Korea has proposed about 70 international standards to ISO every year and has been consistently carrying out international standardization activities, such as assuming the roles of chair, secretary, and host for over 200 people and supporting standardization activities in developing countries.
Lee Seung-woo, Minister of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, stated, “Through the appointment as a member of the International Organization for Standardization’s Executive Board, we have established a foothold to advance to a permanent position in the future,” adding, “As a member of the ISO Executive Board, I will act as a bridge connecting developed and developing countries so that all member countries can equally enjoy the benefits of international standards.”
Meanwhile, Korea held bilateral meetings with the United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and others during the general assembly to strengthen mutual cooperation in the field of standard certification.

Korea Leads ITU-T International Standardization Research on Distributed Ledger Technology
The National Institute of Radio Research of the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that three pre-standardization research documents on distributed ledger technology, developed under South Korea's leadership, were agreed upon as final deliverables of the ITU-T Distributed Ledger Technology Focus Group International Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland from July 29 to August 1. Distributed ledger technology is an information security technology designed to protect digital ledgers in which participants in a P2P network continuously update all transaction records, and integrity is verified through a decentralized consensus mechanism when data states are modified or recorded, providing advantages against document forgery, tampering, and hacking. These three research documents will be transferred to the ITU-T SG17 study group and are scheduled to be developed as formal international standards.

8K Association Confirms Key Standards for Next-Generation 8K Displays
The 8K Association has announced standards for key performance and specifications for 8K TVs. The 8K Association is a global non-profit organization aimed at establishing 8K-related standards and expanding the ecosystem, and currently has 16 companies participating, including Samsung Electronics, TV and panel manufacturers, SoC chip vendors, and content providers. The 8K TV-related standards announced this time were developed based on current and future technology trends with participation from member companies in the display, SoC chip, and content sectors.

Four ITU-T security standards proposed by Korea have been pre-adopted.
Four recommendations for intelligent vehicle security, quantum cryptographic communications, and smart grid, developed under Korea's leadership, have been pre-adopted as international standards at the ITU-T SG17 international conference. The first recommendation, the 'V2X Communication Environment Security Guideline (X.1372)' international standard, defines security technologies for vehicle communications, which form the foundation of autonomous vehicle services. The second recommendation, the 'Connected Car Security Threat Definition (X.1371)' international standard, defines use cases for providing intelligent vehicle security services and identifies and defines security threats that may occur in each use case. The third recommendation, the 'Quantum Noise Random Number Generator Architecture (X.1702)' international standard, defines a random number generation method that applies quantum technology from a security perspective for the first time in the world. The fourth recommendation, the 'Smart Metering Service Security Guideline (X.1332)' international standard, defines security measures for safely utilizing data collected from users' smart meters in smart grid environments.
