Expectations of utilizing domestic and international advancements in cloud storage technology


ETRI has developed a technology that integrates and manages internal storage space and external cloud storage space.

According to an IDC survey, the amount of digital data generated annually is projected to increase from 33 zettabytes (ZB) in 2018 to 175 ZB by 2025. Notably, 49% of this data is expected to be stored in public cloud environments.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 26th that it has succeeded in developing Cloud Integrated Storage (CiS) technology that can manage individual storage spaces on a single platform.

CiS offers high security by encrypting data before transmitting and storing it in the cloud. In addition, it is equipped with ETRI's in-memory based data storage technology, allowing for fast access to stored data anytime and anywhere.

CiS technology was approved as an international standard by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) last May.

ETRI is currently preparing to transfer CiS technology to three small and medium-sized enterprises and aims for commercialization next year through a pilot service this year.

Kim Seong-un, a principal researcher at ETRI’s AI Research Institute, stated, “Through CiS technology, we have secured technological competitiveness in the cloud infrastructure market, which is dominated by global companies.” He added, “CiS technology can be utilized in various services, including cloud service providers requiring solutions to handle exploding data, as well as public institutions and enterprises that require rapid data control and analysis.”
