STMicroelectronics announced on the 11th that it has released the 'TCPP01-M12' USB-C port protection IC.

With the TCPP01-M12, you can migrate small electronic devices from existing USB Micro-A or Micro-B interconnects to USB-C.

The TCPP01-M12, an MCU companion chip, works with the 20V/100W USB-C PD (Power Delivery) controller integrated into ST's STM32G0 and STM32G4 MCUs.

It also features 5V-only connection protection managed by general-purpose MCUs such as STM32 and STM8 devices. Since all functions are handled solely by the TCPP01-M12 and MCU, the solution can be implemented in a cost- and space-efficient manner.

TCPP01-M12 supports upgrading industrial PCs and mobile POS terminals, as well as medical devices, wearables, wall chargers, automotive infotainment equipment, game terminals, drones, audio-video systems, gateways, computers, and peripherals to the latest features.

It is equipped with protection features against defective power adapters to prevent equipment damage caused by the application of an incorrect power profile due to a power supply defect. It includes short-circuit protection between the VBUS pin and the CC (Configuration Channel) line, as well as IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ±8kV ESD protection for VBUS and CC.

The TCPP01-M12 extends battery life by switching to zero-power operation when the cable is not connected. Additionally, it enables fast charging of electronic devices by utilizing USB PD PPS (Programmable Power Supply).

Material costs can be reduced by integrating the driver circuit for the external N-channel load switch. In addition, unlike commonly used P-channel MOSFETs, it supports PPS and features low on-resistance characteristics, minimizing overall heat loss.

The TCPP01-M12 is currently in mass production and is available for purchase as a QFN-12 device. The price is $0.379 for a purchase of 1,000 units.
