KT Conducts World's First 5G Press Tour

On-Site Visit to KT Convergence Technology Institute's Future On and 5G Open Lab
On the 6th, KT showcased the world's first 5G technology and cutting-edge AI technology to journalists from leading global media outlets invited to Korea's largest foreign investment attraction event hosted by the Korean government, elevating the Republic of Korea's ICT leadership and standing.

The foreign journalists who visited this time were invited to the 2019 Foreign Investment Week (Invest Korea Week 2019, IKW) hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by KOTRA, and conducted press tours including visits to the Gyeonggi-do Autonomous Driving Center along with KT and startup lab visits.
A total of 21 foreign journalists from 20 media outlets across 10 countries, including the Washington Post from the United States, Die Zeit from Germany, China Daily from China, and Nikkei from Japan, visited KT's R&D Center located in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and toured the latest ICT promotion center 'Future On' and the 5G B2B collaboration space '5G Open Lab'.
KT, which recently declared its radical transformation into the world's leading 5G-based AI specialist company, also hosted a global press tour in September inviting 47 journalists from 23 media outlets across 10 countries, including the New York Times, ABC, Reuters TV, and NHK, to visit the Daeseong-dong 5G Village, the only village in the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which received significant acclaim.
IKW 2019 was held in Seoul for four days from the 5th to the 7th under the theme 'Connect Korea, Connect Global'.

SKT and Samsung Electronics Take First Step Toward Commercialization of 5G SA Service
SK Telecom announced that it has successfully achieved data communication using a pure 5G system by interconnecting a 5G SA packet switch, which is Korea's first 5G standalone standard equipment, and core equipment together with Samsung Electronics. A packet switch is an essential gateway through which all voice and data traffic generated from mobile devices such as smartphones must pass in order to access the internet network. The current 5G network operates in NSA mode, which partially shares equipment with LTE. 5G SA, which configures the network with 5G equipment only, requires significant time, cost, and resources for standardization and development. The 5G SA presented this time demonstrates data processing efficiency three times higher compared to the existing 5G NSA. It can efficiently control large-scale traffic and provide optimal communication performance for next-generation services expected in the 5G era, such as AR/VR, autonomous driving, smart factories, and smart farms.

KT Demonstrates 28GHz Band Enterprise 5G Network Technology
KT demonstrated FAST.NET, an enterprise-dedicated 5G network technology, using the 28GHz frequency band. The FAST.NET technology is KT's ultra-low latency infrastructure technology designed to transmit all data from terminals through networks to services within a round-trip latency of 10ms or less. It is a core technology for future enterprise-exclusive 5G networks aimed at realizing autonomous vehicles and smart factory automation control. In the demonstration, using 5G base station equipment and terminals supporting the domestic 28GHz band, ultra-low latency data transmission of a minimum of 5ms and an average of 8ms was achieved in actual wireless environments.

SKT, Uplus, and NIPA Collaborate to Build 5G IoT Ecosystem
SK Telecom, LG U+, and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) announced that they have concluded a memorandum of understanding to establish a mutually beneficial cooperation ecosystem in the 5G IoT sector. The three parties agreed to support domestic small and medium-sized enterprises in discovering 5G-based IoT services and building industrial competitiveness. NIPA plans to create an environment where IoT products can be inspected and pre-tested in accordance with 5G interoperability technical specifications. U+ and SKT agreed to maintain cooperation by sharing communication network interoperability technical specifications related to 5G IoT and regularly exchanging information about each company's test environments.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
