Western Digital Announces Two Purple Storage Products for 24/7 Recording Cameras

According to IHS Markit, global shipments of professional video security surveillance cameras are expected to increase from 140 million units in 2018 to 224 million units in 2023. Consequently, on-board storage is also expected to grow by an average of approximately 17% annually.
The share of 4K-compatible cameras in total network camera shipments is expected to increase from 3.6% in 2018 to 24% in 2023. 4K video generates up to 5.7 times more data than 1080p resolution video, driving a surge in storage demand.

Western Digital (WD) unveiled two new surveillance storage products optimized for video and AI analytics at the network edge on the 7th. The new products unveiled this time are the WD Purple SC QD101 Ultra Endurance microSD card and the WD Purple 14TB HDD.
The WD Purple SC QD101 microSD card is based on WD's 96-layer 3D NAND technology. A status check monitoring function is provided based on camera compatibility, allowing durability measurements and enabling security system SIs and installers to take preemptive action. Customers can choose from 32, 128, 256, and 512 GB capacities.
The WD Purple 14TB HDD improves video recording performance by reducing errors, pixilation (stuttering playback), and recording interruptions that can occur in video recording systems with WD's "AllFrame" technology. It also supports up to 64 cameras for 24/7 recording.
“We see a growing demand for on-camera storage with high endurance, high capacity and ruggedness for applications like public safety and AI analytics,” said Stefaan Vervaet, senior director of smart video for WD Devices Group. “WD’s two new products provide storage technology that can manage diverse new video workloads at the edge.”
The WD Purple 14TB HDD is currently available for purchase through authorized domestic importers and other authorized retailers. The WD Purple SC QD101 microSD card is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2020.

WD Announces 18- and 20-TB HDDs for Data Centers
Western Digital has unveiled new enterprise-class HDDs—the 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR HDD and 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR HDD—to meet data center customers' requirements for TCO improvement. The two new HDDs are based on a nine-disk platform with energy-assisted recording technology, delivering high capacity on the basis of high areal density. WD plans to ship samples of the 18TB Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR HDD and 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR HDD by the end of the year and will begin mass production in the first half of 2020. Additionally, it is expected that more than half of WD's HDD shipments will be based on SMR technology by 2023.
