Finally approved as an ITU international standard
An international standard to facilitate the distribution of big data has been approved by domestic researchers at the ITU Popov.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 15th that metadata requirements and a conceptual model for big data catalogs were finally approved as international standards at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standardization meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on October 25.
The newly approved standard defines the metadata required for the processes of generating, storing, processing, analyzing, visualizing, exchanging, and deleting big data. In addition, it provides a detailed conceptual metadata model written in UML (Unified Modeling Language) and an implementation in XML format that allows developers to easily apply and develop the metadata. This standard can be widely used not only for data management within companies or organizations but also for big data sharing and data markets.
The research team has been working on developing major big data standards by developing a big data exchange framework and requirements, requirements for big data source management, requirements for cloud-based big data services, and a big data-based cloud computing service architecture.
Kang Shin-gak, Head of the Standards Research Division at ETRI, stated, “Through this achievement, we have laid the foundation to more effectively support the explosively increasing demand for data,” adding, “We plan to continue research and development on international standards for data utilization in the future.”

Korea Leads ITU-T International Standardization Research on Distributed Ledger Technology
The National Institute of Radio Research of the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that three pre-standardization research documents on distributed ledger technology, developed under South Korea's leadership, were agreed upon as final deliverables of the ITU-T Distributed Ledger Technology Focus Group International Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland from July 29 to August 1. Distributed ledger technology is an information security technology designed to protect digital ledgers in which participants in a P2P network continuously update all transaction records, and integrity is verified through a decentralized consensus mechanism when data states are modified or recorded, providing advantages against document forgery, tampering, and hacking. These three research documents will be transferred to the ITU-T SG17 study group and are scheduled to be developed as formal international standards.

Four ITU-T security standards proposed by Korea have been pre-adopted.
Four recommendations for intelligent vehicle security, quantum cryptographic communications, and smart grid, developed under Korea's leadership, have been pre-adopted as international standards at the ITU-T SG17 international conference. The first recommendation, the 'V2X Communication Environment Security Guideline (X.1372)' international standard, defines security technologies for vehicle communications, which form the foundation of autonomous vehicle services. The second recommendation, the 'Connected Car Security Threat Definition (X.1371)' international standard, defines use cases for providing intelligent vehicle security services and identifies and defines security threats that may occur in each use case. The third recommendation, the 'Quantum Noise Random Number Generator Architecture (X.1702)' international standard, defines a random number generation method that applies quantum technology from a security perspective for the first time in the world. The fourth recommendation, the 'Smart Metering Service Security Guideline (X.1332)' international standard, defines security measures for safely utilizing data collected from users' smart meters in smart grid environments.

ETRI Develops CiS Technology to Integrate Cloud Storage
ETRI has successfully developed Cloud integrated Storage (CiS) technology, a unified cloud storage solution that enables management of individual storage spaces from a single platform. CiS encrypts data before transmitting and storing it in the cloud, providing high security. Additionally, it incorporates ETRI's in-memory-based data storage technology, enabling fast access to stored data from anywhere at any time. The CiS technology received approval as an international standard by ITU-T in May of last year.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
